Move over, superheroes. The next big entertainment era may have less capes and a whole lot more talking cartoon animals. It’s the 1930s all over again!

In a stunning display of box-office dominance, Zootopia 2 has already surpassed the global earnings of Superman (2025)… and it accomplished this feat in just one week. The achievement is remarkable not only for the speed at which Disney’s animated sequel climbed the charts, but also for what it signals in an entertainment landscape increasingly defined by uncertainty.

While Superman entered 2025 as one of the year’s most heavily marketed and culturally anticipated tentpole releases, promising the revitalization of a storied DC franchise, its box-office performance has plateaued faster than industry observers expected.

In contrast, Zootopia 2 has emerged as a rare, across-the-board juggernaut, delivering explosive turnout domestically and performing especially well in major overseas markets where animated family films traditionally thrive.

The most shocking thing about all of this is that Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde aren’t speeding to record-breaking levels in the United States or literally anywhere else. It’s just in China. And for that reason, Disney may actually be more excited than ever.

The momentum behind Zootopia 2 demonstrates the enduring — and perhaps growing — appeal of universally accessible storytelling anchored in humor, heart, and broad cultural resonance. International audiences, especially in China, have embraced the film with an enthusiasm that recalls the record-setting success of the original Zootopia, propelling the sequel into blockbuster status at lightning speed.

Its strong word-of-mouth and multigenerational reach have helped create a global event film without relying on nostalgia for caped superheroes or the complicated lore that often accompanies comic-book franchises. Meanwhile, Superman, despite its brand power, has faced a more polarized reception, with critics and audiences split over its tone, direction, and broader implications for DC’s rebooted cinematic universe.

For Disney, the triumph of Zootopia 2 arrives at a pivotal moment, offering a refreshing counterbalance to some of the studio’s more recent box-office challenges. It’s also a signal to Hollywood that China might be open for business again if studios are willing to make what they want. It isn’t going to work the other way. The film’s soaring numbers bolster confidence in the animation division’s ability to deliver true crowd-pleasers and reaffirm Disney’s global theatrical strength even as live-action blockbusters grow more unpredictable. Superman’s worldwide total so rapidly underscores not only its commercial power but also a shift in audience priorities—toward films that provide uplifting escapism, strong ensemble character dynamics, and cross-cultural appeal. If early indicators hold, Zootopia 2 may be on track to become one of the year’s most significant theatrical wins, while also reshaping the conversation around what kinds of films resonate most deeply in today’s global market.

The protagonist are (furrified) caucasian-looking. And, hey presto, massive sales! They can’t blame Covid and even the “Strikes”.
Of course, with actors cut out of the loop, they can generate movies like this with AI. Because highly stylised characters are far less subject to uncanny valley.
So, SAGRA, your all your DEI members are all f****d.
