After finally nailing a financial success in the form of 2022’s Sonic Frontiers, Sega may have another “ace” up their sleeve!

For those unfamiliar, Sonic Frontiers was Sonic the Hedgehog’s first venture into open world exploration for the popular “Sonic Series” and it definitely delivered on sales due to its rockin’ soundtrack, wonderful visuals and fun gameplay. The success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and Sonic’s reception with kids probably helped a lot too!
It appears that those enjoying what could be perhaps a true “Sonic Renaissance” will have even more to be excited for!

According to insider Daniel Richtman and later collaborated by X user @MbKKssTBhz5, Sonic Frontiers 2 has entered development.

What the final title will be remains to be seen, but it’s very likely that Sega will follow the success of the recent style of gameplay that the creator’s have dubbed as “Open-Zone.”
While this could spark a lot of excitement, Sonic fans should be weary until more information is revealed to everyone. A remake of the popular “Adventure” games on the Sega Dreamcast, later ported to the Nintendo GameCube, were long rumored to be in development in the 2010s, never materialized and it is not currently confirmed if those remakes ever existed or not. However, many rumors surrounding Sonic Frontiers were proven correct over time, so perhaps the alleged sequel will have the same result.

What exactly will be in this new possible game is currently unknown, hopefully it can avoid the “Unreal Engine” stock asset memes throughout the release this time around. Perhaps SEGA could take influence from Tokusatsu after having giant enemies in Sonic Frontiers or perhaps have another go at a “good or bad” storyline from Shadow the Hedgehog with the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie hype.
With the new more open-world gameplay, there are “endless possibilities,” let’s just hope that SEGA doesn’t decide to change everything for a new game when fans are eager to see another go at the newest gameplay style for the series!
With Sonic X Shadows Generations coming out this Fall, it’s likely that Sonic Fans will have to wait a little bit before getting to play this possible sequel, but with SEGA having quite a reception for getting games out “as fast as Sonic’s speed”, Sonic Frontiers 2 will likely come out much sooner than the gap between the last Sonic 3D games.
