$400 GTA 6 Collector’s Edition Doesn’t Include The Game

Rockstar Games has unveiled a massive $400 collector’s box for Grand Theft Auto VI. There is just one rather important thing missing: Grand Theft Auto VI.

The company officially revealed Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, a limited-edition package containing 11 pieces of merchandise inspired by Vice City and Leonida.

At $399.99, buyers receive everything from Oakley sunglasses to a six-inch alligator figure. However, Rockstar makes one detail perfectly clear at the bottom of its official listing: “Grand Theft Auto VI game sold separately.”

Rockstar isn’t simply withholding a physical copy from the collector’s set. The company isn’t even throwing in a download code.

That means customers can spend $400 on the ultimate GTA VI collectible package and still have absolutely no way to play GTA VI.

What Does $400 Actually Buy?

Dedicated fans who aren’t put off by the high price will receive quite a bit of merchandise.

The centerpiece is a six-inch Macca the Gator figure with a hidden stash compartment. Buyers also receive matte black GTA VI Oakley Frogskins sunglasses, a New Era snapback hat, Leonida Keys crossbody bag, magnetic mirror, shot glass, swizzle spoon, razor blade keychain, enamel pin set, sticker pack, and double-sided souvenir poster featuring Leonida.

It is certainly more substantial than a statue and steelbook stuffed into an oversized box.

Still, Rockstar could presumably have included a code for the $79.99 Standard Edition, allowing its most dedicated customers to actually play the game represented by all that merchandise.

Instead, anyone buying the collection must purchase GTA VI separately.

There’s Not Even a Download Code

The omission becomes even more glaring when considering how little Rockstar would have needed to add.

The company didn’t have to squeeze a Blu-ray into the collector’s package or manufacture another elaborate physical product. It could have simply slipped a piece of paper containing a download code into a box that already weighs roughly 22 pounds.

Instead, customers spending $399.99 still need to make a separate purchase before they can actually play the game all that merchandise is celebrating.

Gamers online are already questioning the value.

“Do you want to know what it feels like to get robbed like you were in the game?” one user wrote on X. “Rockstar has recreated the experience here.”

The distinction also makes the “collector’s edition” label somewhat ironic. While the GTA V collector’s edition reportedly offered considerably fewer items, it did come with the game. Here, the collectibles have effectively become their own separate product.

GTA VI Won’t Even Have a Disc

The missing game also arrives amid another potentially controversial decision from Rockstar: GTA VI apparently won’t receive a traditional physical release at all.

According to a June report from The Hollywood Reporter, Rockstar Games currently has no plans to release Grand Theft Auto VI on physical discs.

The game will still be sold through traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. However, those boxes will contain download codes rather than discs.

That distinction matters as the gaming industry continues moving toward digital distribution. With Sony also moving away from discs with its next PlayStation, players concerned about physical ownership are watching one of gaming’s biggest releases abandon the format entirely.

“Why are they making SO MUCH physical stuff for this game but REFUSE to sell the game itself physically?” another user wrote. “Are they that afraid of someone having a copy they can’t patch anything out of?”

For a company willing to sell nearly 22 pounds of physical GTA VI collectibles, Rockstar seems remarkably reluctant to sell the one physical item many fans actually want: the game itself.
