A box office analyst claims that director Nia DaCosta and Brie Larson’s The Marvels will lose Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Company around $300 million after the film set another record with the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels. It posted the worst second weekend drop in MCU history.

The Marvels only grossed an estimated $10.2 million according to Box Office Report in its second weekend. The film’s opening weekend clocked in at $46.2 million.

That means the film saw a 78% decline in its grosses from its opening weekend to its second weekend. This is the worst decline in Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which released into theaters back in February previously held the record for the worst decline with 70%. The film saw its opening weekend decline from $106.1 million to $31.9 million in its second weekend.

Overall, The Marvels has currently grossed $65 million domestically and another $96.3 million internationally for a global gross of $161.3 million.

As for the film’s current weekend estimations, box office analyst Valliant Renegade predicts they are actually high for the film.

He explained, “It’s probably going to come in even slightly worse. This movie has consistently underperformed even the already low expectations that the analysts out there have foisted upon it. And we’re looking at perhaps a now $10 million or sub $10 million second weekend coming off an already terrible $46 million first weekend. The worst in MCU history.”

To that point, the opening weekend box office estimations for The Marvels claimed the movie brought in $47 million. When the actuals came in it was $800,000 lower at $46.2 million.

Valliant Renegade also notes this abysmal performance by The Marvels at the box office means the film is going to lose The Walt Disney Company and Marvel Studios hundreds of millions of dollars.

Citing a report from Caroline Reid at Forbes that notes that production budget for the film clocked in at $274 million as of September 2022, Valliant Renegade states, “That figure was before the massive amount of reshoots, yet again, that occurred in 2023. That $275 million or so figure that Caroline Reid drew from the financial returns from The Walt Disney Company itself in the UK was before they delayed the film after the disastrous opening of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to give The Marvels an additional several to months to do massive amounts of reshoots, weeks on end, in addition to a lot of brand new additional post-production: editing, VFX, CGI, throw the whole ball of wax in there.”

“If they had already spent $275 million up to that point and then went back to the drawing board the final tally for this film we may not know for another year to year and a half because that figure, that $275 million figure that Caroline [Reid] reported, that’s only through July of 2022.”

He then estimated, “That means this $274 million figure in the article could easily make it up to about $100 million more, closer to $370 to $380 million potentially. Very easily done with the amount of reshoots that is rumored to have been packed in the last 6 to 8 months for this film.”

Next, he did point out the movie has received the UK’s generous tax credits for filming in the country, “Now, of course, there are some film tax credits, which is why I think the net cost of this film for Disney will come back down to around or maybe just a little bit under $300 million.”

Valliant Renegade went on to note that the film’s international gross only increased by around $30 million in its first week. It was reported the film grossed $62.8 million internationally in its opening weekend. Given the overall international gross currently sits at $96.3 million that means the film only brought in $33.5 million through its second weekend and including its entire first week.

Given this poor performance on both the domestic and international front he states, “This movie is going to struggle to get past $200 million gross global retail. … And if this movie finishes out around $200 to $225 million, we have a a big problem. With a nearly $300 million net expense by The Walt Disney Company to produce this movie and easily another $100 million in global marketing … puts Disney’s all in cost for this film at around $400 million. That means this movie easily needed to break $800 million at the box office to recover that $400 million in costs and it’s not going to get anywhere close.”

He then notes the film will “lose somewhere to the tune of about $300 million.”
