A new rumor claims that Sony’s upcoming Madame Web film will alter the iconic Spider-Man line, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

The line was originally published in Amazing Fantasy #15 back in 1962 at the end of the very first Spider-Man story written by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

An unnamed narrator, which would eventually be attributed to Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben states, “And a lean, silent figure slowly fades into the gathering darkness, aware at last that in this world, with great power there must also come — great responsibility!”

It concluded, “And so a legend is born and a new name is added to the roster of those who make the world of fantasy the most exciting realm of all!”

Scooper Cryptic4KQual claims this iconic line will be significantly altered in Madame Web. He notes the line in the final cut is, “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come.”

The line clearly has a very different meaning than the original and iconic line. In the original line, it clearly notes that someone who has great power such as Spider-Man should use that power for good, thus his great responsibility. In fact, it is expected that he will use his power for good and there are even greater expectations than someone who has less power.

The line is very similar to the Gospel of Luke that states, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

It’s also similar to The Parable of the Talents found in the Gospel of Matthew where the master hands out a specific number of talents to three different individuals and expects them to return with more.

In fact, the master informs the one servant who was given five talents and returned with 10, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.”

In contrast, this line in Madame Web claims that one will be rewarded with great power if you take on the responsibility.

The power is essentially a gift for doing one’s responsibility.
