Nintendo has not released many details about the Switch successor, but this is a pretty big one. However, the statement does leave open whether the physical cartridges for the Nintendo Switch will be compatible with the successor given the emphasis about Nintendo Switch Online.
Given it’s unclear if the physical cartridges will be compatible, it’s unclear if games purchased physically will be accessible without cost on the successor if it is digital only.

Nevertheless, an announcement for the Nintendo Switch successor is expected soon. Back in May, Furukawa did reveal that Nintendo would announce the successor within the company’s fiscal year.
He posted, “This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
