A new rumor is making the rounds states that T’Challa will be recast for the next Black Panther movie and the larger Marvel universe going forward, something the late star Chadwick Boseman’s brother has insisted he would have wanted.

Black Panther 3 was confirmed greenlit by Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito in December of 2024. Apparently, they intend to recast the role of King T’Challa, made famous by Boseman.

After the success of the first Black Panther movie, news of star Chadwick Boseman’s death struck fans across the world. At the time, Marvel Studios decided to not recast T’Challa as an homage to Boseman. They also decided to pass the mantle of Black Panther to his sister Shuri.

Learning this, Chadwick Boseman’s brother stated that Chadwick would have wanted his character recast. He insisted that Chadwick believed the influence of T’Challa and Black Panther would, and should, continue through another actor—that his legacy would endure.

Though many fans agreed and urged Marvel executives to honor Boseman’s wishes, they ignored the feedback. Instead of recasting Black Panther as a small skinny woman. They also used Boseman’s death as a plot point in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the film, T’Challa dies off-screen from disease, mirroring Chadwick Boseman’s lost battle with cancer. Then they passed the role and title of Black Panther to Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister.

Though this did in fact occur in the comics, it was not a good move for Marvel Studios. Using Chadwick Boseman’s death as a plot-driver was both disrespectful and insulting to the late actor and the character he played. But Marvel, of course, didn’t care. It used the opportunity to put Shuri in the Black Panther costume and portray another unrealistic “girl-boss.”

Now it seems they’ve decided to walk back that decision. Perhaps the film’s lackluster box office earnings had something to do with it. Regardless, the executives at Marvel Studios might finally have realized their mistake.

With the introduction of the Multiverse comes new casting and recasting opportunities. Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider revealed that “the door is firmly open for T’Challa to be recast via the magic of the multiverse.” In an article from The Direct, Jeff’s sources claim that Marvel is already in talks with several actors. He stated that fans should expect the Black Panther recast to be announced for Black Panther 3. Jeff also claimed that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will help with the recasting process in order to ensure that “everything will be handled with the utmost care and in consultation with Boseman’s family.”

As to whom the new King of Wakanda might be, Jeff Sneider said it’s “been discussed by everyone from Ryan Coogler to Denzel Washington.” Other news outlets, however, have reported otherwise. One claims that Black Adam star Aldis Hodge is being courted while another states that Snowfall actor Damson Idris was offered the role but turned it down.

Truly, with all these different claims, it could be anyone.

There is no way to know for certain who will take Chadwick Boseman’s place as T’Challa in the next Black Panther movie. However, we at That Park Place will continue to monitor the buzz and report back on further developments as they arise.
