It’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the mounting issues plaguing Walt Disney World’s infrastructure. Hot on the heels of EPCOT’s sewage leaks and a ceiling collapse inside Soarin’ Around the World, Magic Kingdom suffered a widespread Disney power outage last night, shutting down more than 15 attractions across the park.

While Disney remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the power outage, WDW Magic reported that its sources indicated the disruption stemmed from issues with the park’s compressed air system, a critical component that supports the functionality of many attractions. The result? A theme park that was barely operational during peak evening hours, and a whole park full of guests who paid fill price to get in.

A Night of Frustration for Guests

As of 7:30 p.m. on February 10, My Disney Experience was showing massive ride closures throughout Magic Kingdom. Some of the most popular attractions, including Space Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, were all rendered inoperable (that’s not new for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, though…).

The full list of closed attractions in alphabetical order includes:

  • The Barnstormer
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • Country Bear Jamboree
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant
  • Enchanted Tales with Belle
  • “it’s a small world”
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Prince Charming Regal Carrousel
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
  • Space Mountain
  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
  • Tomorrowland Speedway
  • Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid
  • Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress
  • Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room

The outage left guests scrambling for entertainment as standby times soared for the few rides that remained open, such as TRON Lightcycle Run, The Haunted Mansion, and Jungle Cruise. The situation was made even worse for those attending the Disney After Hours event, a separately ticketed experience that was supposed to offer lower crowds and exclusive nighttime access to attractions—many of which were unavailable.

By the next morning, Disney had resolved the technical failures, and the park resumed normal operations. However, the lack of an official explanation raises major concerns about whether these failures will continue to occur.

Recurring Infrastructure Failures at Walt Disney World

The Disney power outage is just the latest in a troubling pattern of infrastructure-related problems plaguing Walt Disney World Resort. Recently, EPCOT’s The Land Pavilion suffered two major incidents.

First, a sewage leak near Soarin’ Around the World flooded guest walkways and temporarily shut down the attraction. Then, a ceiling collapse inside the Soarin’ queue reportedly sent wood and debris onto a guest walkway, nearly striking several guests and cast members. Then there’s Magic Kingdom’s own history of maintenance issues. In August 2024, Frontierland and Liberty Square suffered a major sewage spill, forcing Disney to close off entire sections of the park. This marked at least the third sewage-related incident in that part of Magic Kingdom in recent years, raising concerns about aging infrastructure.

These incidents have fueled speculation about the state of Disney’s maintenance and structural integrity.

When considering these events as a whole, one thing becomes clear—Disney’s infrastructure appears to be under significant strain, and guests are paying the price, all while paying a much steeper price to gain entry to the park in the first place.

A Declining Standard for a Premium Experience?

It’s no secret that a trip to Walt Disney World has become more expensive than ever. Ticket prices, Genie+ fees, and upcharges for after-hours events have all skyrocketed, yet guests are now dealing with issues that feel more in line with a struggling regional park rather than Disney’s so-called most magical place on earth.

These are not small inconveniences—they are glaring indicators that something is wrong with the upkeep of Disney’s parks. When guests pay top-tier prices, they expect top-tier maintenance and reliability.

That begs the question, will Disney address the problem?

The lack of transparency from Disney regarding these ongoing infrastructure failures is troubling. With no official statements on the cause of these issues or what measures are being taken to prevent them in the future, guests are left wondering whether more breakdowns, leaks, and collapses are on the horizon. Disney is intent on bulldozing classic attractions like Tom Sawyer Island, MuppetVision 3D, and Dinosaur to make way for new experiences, but perhaps the House of Mouse should make sure it can keep the lights on and the sewage underground before aiming so high.

If these failures continue at the current rate, Disney may find itself in a situation where even die-hard fans begin questioning whether the cost of admission is worth the experience. Until the company takes significant steps to address and modernize its infrastructure, these embarrassing incidents will only continue to pile up.
