Microsoft has officially delayed its upcoming Fable reboot from its original 2025 release window to 2026. This news was accompanied by a brief new pre-alpha gameplay showcase, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect from the latest entry in the beloved franchise.

Which wasn’t much…

The delay was announced during the latest Official Xbox Podcast, where Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, attempted to reassure fans.

“I just want to start with, really excited about progress,” Duncan began. “Really excited about where Playground are. We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025. We are actually going to give Fable more time, and it’s going to ship in 2026 now.

“While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait,” he continued. “I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team. If you think about their history and legacy for Forza Horizon, the last few games, critically acclaimed, 92 Metacritic, award-winning, beautiful, play great. And just what they’re bringing to Fable as a franchise, just think of the visuals of what you expect of Playground games plus amazing gameplay, British humor, Playground’s version of Albion. So inspired by what’s gone before with the franchise but their take, in quite frankly the most beautifully realized version of Albion you’ve ever seen.”

Despite his rosy appraisal of the Fable being delayed, fans of the original three games are nowhere near as enthusiastic about this project.

A Concerning Trend in Character Design

While nothing has been officially confirmed, Fable has drawn significant criticism over its apparent move away from a key franchise feature: the ability to choose between playing as a male or female protagonist. All gameplay footage released so far features the same female lead, sparking speculation that customization options may be more limited than in past entries.

Additionally, the main character showcased in trailers has been widely criticized for lacking the charm and aesthetic appeal many associate with the Fable series (She’s ugly…).

This aligns with a growing trend in Western AAA gaming, where major studios have been accused of prioritizing ideology over consumer preferences in character design. Female protagonists in recent titles have consistently been given more masculine features, a shift that has not gone unnoticed by longtime gamers. Examples include Kay Vess in Star Wars: Outlaws, Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man 2, and Aloy in Horizon: Forbidden West—all characters who have received similar critiques for their noticeably altered appearances compared to past industry standards.

The Pre-Alpha Gameplay Reveal

Alongside the announcement that Fable has been delayed, Microsoft released approximately 50 seconds of new Fable gameplay footage. The clips showcase a mix of combat, exploration, and a nod to the series’ signature humor with a chicken-kicking moment. Players got a look at different weapons, including a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, a larger sword, and magical fireball attacks. One scene depicts the protagonist setting a trap for a werewolf-like creature, reinforcing the game’s fantasy elements.

Despite the polished visuals, the short preview left many fans wondering whether Fable will retain its original spirit or if it will follow the path of recent AAA titles that have prioritized messaging over engaging gameplay. Playground Games has a reputation for delivering high-quality environments, but whether they can successfully translate that talent into an RPG experience remains to be seen. Additionally, the team at Playground have never worked on the Fable franchise before. The game was originally the work of Lionhead Studios, which Microsoft closed down years ago while in development of a fourth Fable adventure.

A Legacy at Risk

First announced in 2020, Fable was positioned as a “new beginning” for the franchise, yet details remain sparse even four years later. While Xbox executives continue to insist that the game is in good hands, this delay, coupled with mounting concerns over the creative choices being made, does little to assure longtime fans. Fable was once a franchise known for its player freedom, witty dialogue, and a unique blend of humor and adventure. The question now is whether Playground Games will honor that legacy or steer it in a direction that alienates its original audience.

With its release now pushed to 2026, there’s still time for adjustments. However, if the current trajectory remains unchanged, Fable risks becoming yet another example of a beloved franchise being reimagined in ways that leave its core fanbase behind.
