In an unexpected twist that stunned both his audience and political observers, political comedian Bill Maher, a longtime outspoken democrat, offered an unusually positive account of his recent dinner with President Donald Trump—describing the evening as not only civil but surprisingly pleasant.

Maher, 69, is the longtime host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, a weekly late-night talk show known for its blend of comedy, interviews, and political commentary. Over the years, Maher has carved out a reputation as an unapologetically liberal voice, often mocking Republican figures with biting satire. His ongoing feud with Donald Trump has been especially bitter, with Maher routinely mocking the president as everything from a narcissist to an authoritarian, while Trump has fired back by calling Maher a “sleaze-bag” and a “low-life dummy.”
Despite that history, Maher’s recent trajectory has taken on a more independent tone. Though he still identifies as a liberal Democrat, Maher has been vocal in his criticism of the far-left shift in American politics. He’s spoken out against issues like men competing in women’s sports, the ideological capture of academic institutions, and what he calls “the woke revolution.” He’s also clashed with the hosts of The View, challenging their one-sided takes and questioning the new orthodoxy of progressive thought.
While Maher’s core political beliefs haven’t changed, his refusal to toe the activist line has led to backlash from many in his own party. Once considered a reliable voice of the left, Maher now finds himself labeled by some as a centrist—though he insists it’s the political movement that’s shifted, not him.
It’s against that backdrop that his meeting with President Trump unfolded—and why it caught so many off guard.

During the April 11 episode of Real Time, Maher opened the show with a lengthy monologue recounting his March 31, 2025 visit to the White House. The event included Kid Rock and UFC’s Dana White as fellow guests, but it was Maher’s interaction with Trump that stole the spotlight.
“Everything I’ve not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent. At least on this night, with this guy,” Maher said, appearing somewhat shocked by his own conclusions.
The liberal-leaning talk show host and longtime critic of the president admitted he had come armed with a list of past Trump insults directed at him—including “sleaze-bag” and “low-life dummy”—which he jokingly asked Trump to autograph. To his surprise, Trump did so with a laugh.

“I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump,” the talk show host said, adding, “Make of it what you will.”
Maher revealed that Trump not only asked his opinion on major issues like the Iran nuclear deal—on which they disagreed—but also listened calmly and didn’t lash out.
“He didn’t get mad or call me a left-wing lunatic. He took it in,” Maher said.
He went on to contrast Trump with other powerful figures he’s met.
“I’ve had so many conversations with prominent people who are much less connected,” he said. “People that don’t look you in the eye. People that don’t really listen because they just want to get to their next thing. People whose response to things you say just doesn’t track. None of that with him.”

The comedian also shared his surprise at Trump’s sense of humor.
“Just for starters, he laughs,” Maher stated in disbelief. “I’d never seen him laugh in public. But he does — including at himself — and it’s not fake. Believe me, as a comedian of 40 years, I know a fake laugh when I hear it.”
Maher even noted that Trump gave him a stack of his iconic red campaign hats—handed out in a room once associated with scandal during the Clinton years—but said he felt no pressure to join the president’s political movement or take a photo wearing the hat. The evening, he emphasized, was not a political conversion but a rare and unexpectedly humanizing exchange.

The final shock came when Maher reflected on the contrast between Trump’s private behavior and his public image.
“A crazy person does not live in the White House,” Maher said in summation. “A person who plays a crazy person on TV a lot lives there. Which I know is f–ed up, it’s just not as f–ed up as I thought it was.”

If as many as 10% of the liberals who had this kind of intelligence spoke up, they’d be drowned out and eaten by the angry mob of the left.
I think the trump 80/20 strategy is gonna create so many more Bill mahers.
I expect a lot of people to change parties outright
Don’t care what Maher has to say. He’s an enemy and a snake trying to play both sides. He wished for a recession to get rid of Trump.
Yet Trump was able put that all aside and to take an evening to have dinner and conversation with him. What does it say about you that you can’t do the same thing?
It says that I’m a better judge of character than Trump.
