Universal Orlando has confirmed that Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, the flagship attraction of Epic Universe and its Wizarding World land, will be closed from May 10 through May 16 during the resort’s final preview period.

While the queue will remain open for self-guided tours, the ride itself—considered by many to be the crown jewel of Epic Universe—will be offline as Universal attempts to fix what’s become an increasingly frustrating situation.
Technical Problems Have Plagued the Ride Since April
Epic Universe Harry Potter fans were thrilled when Battle at the Ministry debuted during early previews in April. But it wasn’t long before the attraction revealed its darker side—frequent breakdowns, inconsistent operating hours, and daylong closures became commonplace. The ride was notably absent during most of the Team Member preview period, and when it has been operational, it’s rarely opened before midday.

Universal has not officially commented on the nature of the problems, but industry insiders point to complex ride systems and state-of-the-art show elements that may still be undergoing final tuning before the park’s May 22nd grand opening.
Virtual Queue System Sparks Guest Frustration
To manage the ride’s frequent downtime and poor throughput, Universal implemented a Virtual Queue system—but that has come with its own share of backlash.
Guests have complained about:
- Extremely limited availability each day
- Frustratingly short return windows
- Confusion and lack of transparency around how and when to secure access

The virtual line, intended to keep the area from becoming overcrowded, has instead created a perception of scarcity and guest dissatisfaction, particularly among early preview attendees who expected full access.
Worse yet, the ride reportedly has lower capacity than expected, exacerbating the issue. With limited rider throughput and high demand, securing a spot on Battle at the Ministry has become more like winning the lottery than enjoying a day at the park.
Queue Area to Remain Open as a Walkthrough Experience
While the ride is temporarily closed, guests visiting during the affected week will still be able to explore the stunning Ministry of Magic queue, which will be open for self-guided tours. That means fans can still enjoy the elaborate decor and magical environments… but not the ride itself.

Universal made the following statement on its official site:
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry™ ride will be closed, but The Ministry of Magic is planned to be open for self-guided tours. Availability subject to change.
The attraction is currently scheduled to reopen on May 17, just in time for the final days of previews before Epic Universe’s long-awaited May 22nd grand opening.
Universal Working to Avoid a Grand Opening Embarrassment
There’s no denying that Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is the most ambitious and technologically complex attraction at Epic Universe—and arguably, the best. But Universal now faces the pressure of ensuring that its marquee ride is ready to handle the public by opening day.

This temporary shutdown seems to signal that major adjustments or repairs are needed behind the scenes to avoid a PR nightmare when the media spotlight turns to the park’s debut.
Closing Thoughts
Between the unpopular virtual line, spotty performance, and now a full temporary closure, Universal has a tight deadline to get its act together. With just days left until opening, Epic Universe’s magical Ministry might need more than spells to get things running smoothly.
