Guests trying to ride the newest Harry Potter attraction at Epic Universe are going to have a long wait on their hands.

Just days before its official grand opening, Epic Universe has replaced one headache with another. After widespread complaints about the broken virtual queue system used during technical rehearsals for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, Universal Orlando appears to have quietly scrapped the system — at least for now. But what’s taken its place may be even worse.

300 Minutes in Line — and That Was the “Advertised” Time

In a recent post on X, respected aerial photographer and theme park tracker @bioreconstruct detailed his May 17 experience attempting to ride Battle at the Ministry.

According to his post, the Epic Universe Harry Potter ride displayed a 300-minute wait time — a staggering five hours — but the actual wait turned out to be slightly longer. Bioreconstruct clocked his journey from entry to boarding at five hours and ten minutes, including extended outdoor queues, indoor themed paths, and an unintentional detour that added even more time.

What’s more, issues with team member instructions reportedly soured the experience for many.

“Once past the Battle at Ministry sign, guests are told to choose left line or right line. TM says ‘doesn’t matter,’” he wrote. “Right line is eventually to be Express. Directly to Floo. Left line is full queue, including the outdoor berm. An additional 40 minutes.”

The issue? Staff were allegedly unaware of the queue’s layout — with one side feeding directly into what will soon become the Express queue, while the other snakes through the full standby route. This resulted in guests accidentally taking a significantly longer path due to unclear or incorrect instructions.

Bioreconstruct later noted that the miscommunication has reportedly been resolved, and that Team Members have since been trained to properly direct guests. But the damage was done — and the post has only intensified the spotlight on Epic Universe’s operational growing pains.

From One Queue Problem to Another

Universal quietly transitioned away from using the Virtual Line system for Battle at the Ministry after multiple reports of bugs, loopholes, and unfair practices — including one viral post from a user who booked a ride time from home, without a park ticket.

In place of the digital system, the ride has reopened with a traditional standby queue. But with Epic Universe still in technical rehearsals and demand for the new Harry Potter attraction sky-high, the physical lines have become daunting. Guests are now waiting in overflow areas outside of the themed environments, lining up across street paths and extended berms that were likely never intended for multi-hour holds.

This puts pressure back on Universal to find a solution — one that balances crowd control with fair guest experience, without falling into the same traps Disney has faced with monetized Lightning Lanes and inaccessible boarding groups.

What Happens After May 22?

With the park’s grand opening just days away, it remains unclear whether Universal will re-implement Virtual Line for Battle at the Ministry, introduce Express options immediately, or revert to a more traditional standby strategy long-term. But if early feedback is any indication, the current system — whatever it is — isn’t working well enough to handle opening day crowds.

Whether by app or asphalt, guests are struggling to access one of Epic Universe’s flagship rides. And if that doesn’t change soon, it could overshadow what should be Universal’s most celebrated launch in a generation.
