The wizarding world has found its new stars. HBO has officially announced the three young actors who will step into the roles of the core trio, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley for its upcoming Harry Potter television series.
Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The casting marks a major milestone for the series, which held an open call auditioning over 30,000 hopefuls from around the world.

In a joint statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod praised the new trio.
“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,” they said. “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”
The Cast So Far
While the original film trilogy launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint into global stardom, HBO’s new stars are largely fresh faces.
McLaughlin recently acted in Grow, a Sky comedy starring Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel.
Stanton starred as Matilda in the West End’s Matilda: The Musical from 2023 to 2024.
Stout’s role in Harry Potter marks his first major acting credit.

Also attached to the project is J.K. Rowling, author of the original Harry Potter novels. Rowling is credited as an executive producer alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and Harry Potter film producer David Heyman.
Controversy and Commentary
Rowling’s inclusion has sparked media scrutiny due to her outspoken political positions. When asked about this in a recent interview on The Town podcast, HBO content chief Casey Bloys responded.
“We already have a show on HBO from her called C.B. Strike that we do with the BBC. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”

One casting decision has already sparked intense online debate: Paapa Essiedu’s selection as Severus Snape. While Essiedu is an acclaimed British actor known for roles in I May Destroy You and Gangs of London, his casting drew backlash from fans who argue the character should resemble the description in the original books and Alan Rickman’s portrayal in the films.
Critics of the decision claim HBO prioritized modern identity-driven optics over accuracy to source material, further fueling concerns that the series may be influenced by current cultural trends.

HBO has not commented on that particular backlash, but many online discussions remain divided—especially among longtime fans who view Snape as one of the franchise’s most complex and iconic characters.
The controversy echoes similar debates around legacy character reboots in recent years, placing even more scrutiny on HBO’s approach to honoring the world Rowling originally created.
The casting of this new Harry Potter trio was surrounded by speculation as to whether they would adhere to the original descriptions of the characters from Rowling’s novels. The character of Hermione in particular was race swapped in the Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Production Begins Soon
Filming for the first season is set to begin this summer, with HBO eyeing a release sometime in 2026. The show is expected to adapt Rowling’s seven-book series across multiple seasons, aiming to offer a more faithful and detailed interpretation than the original films.

Whether the show will capture the magic of the books—or weather the scrutiny that comes with it—remains to be seen. But for now, the Sorting Hat has spoken.

The TV show’s woke casting department have guaranteed backlash that will serve as intense NEGATIVE marketing.
I still can’t believe people are going to watch this rehash over 10 years/seasons when the films can be viewed in a matter of hours; the lazy race swapping is just flies on the manure pile…
Remember when the made first Harry Potter? It was so tough. To get the fan expectations right, and reel in new, un indoctrinated fans? They pulled it off with incredible aplomb.
Now’s it’s 2024-5 and best these dei executives come up with is trying to recast what they’re predecessors were able to achieve by simply opening a carton of eggs and taking two to three out and replacing them with brown eggs.
How brave! How original! How pathetic!
Come up with your own siht dei execs. What “Harry Potter” will your speed bump in be remembered as?
