Universal Studios’ proposed theme park in Bedfordshire, England, may take a different approach to nighttime entertainment. Recent planning documents show that the resort intends to limit fireworks displays and may use drone shows as an alternative.
The park, set to open in 2031, would be allowed a maximum of ten fireworks events per year. At least five of these would align with major cultural celebrations, such as Chinese New Year, Diwali, New Year’s Eve, and Guy Fawkes Night. This is a notable departure from the nightly fireworks seen at many other theme parks.

The proposal also outlines how fireworks would be stored and used on-site. Universal plans to use Hazard Type 4 explosives, as defined under the UK’s Explosives Regulations 2014. Total on-site storage would be limited to 4,000 kilograms. These fireworks would be launched from a secure area located on park property.
Potential of Nightly Drone Shows
While the documents do not confirm a drone show, they reference airspace considerations for drones. This has led to speculation that the park may feature drone-based nighttime entertainment. Details on the show’s size, style, or frequency have not been disclosed.
Drone shows have become increasingly popular in recent years. Universal Studios Florida recently reintroduced drones to its “CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular” lagoon show. In that show, hundreds of drones form images from popular Universal films. Characters come from beloved movie franchises such as Super Mario, How to Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Minions, Ghostbusters, and more.

After a short pause due to a safety incident at a different tourist attraction, the drones returned in June 2025.
Universal Studios Great Britain was officially announced in April 2025. The company expects it to draw up to 8.5 million visitors in its first year. While no rides or attractions have been confirmed, trademarks and reports suggest possible themes based on Paddington Bear, James Bond, and The Lord of the Rings. Universal has also filed a UK trademark for Halloween Horror Nights.
The move toward drone shows may reflect both local regulations and environmental concerns. Drones produce less noise and pollution than traditional fireworks. For guests, they could offer a fresh, immersive experience that blends storytelling with technology.
