Democrat politicians are voicing strong concerns over CBS’s decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, questioning whether the move was influenced by political pressures following the comedian’s sharp criticism of parent company Paramount Global’s recent settlement with President Donald Trump.

Senators Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren have led the charge, suggesting the timing—just days after Colbert labeled the payout a “big fat bribe”—raises suspicions of retaliation. This backlash adds to growing outrage from liberal journalists, commentators, and CBS staffers who view the settlement and subsequent cancellation as a “slippery slope” for journalistic integrity amid Paramount’s pending merger with Skydance Media.

Meanwhile, CBS has labeled the decision a purely financial decision.

Politicians’ Outcry: Schiff and Warren Lead the Charge

Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), fresh from taping an appearance on The Late Show, took to social media to express his dismay.

“Just finished taping with Stephen Colbert who announced his show was cancelled,” Schiff said on X. “If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.”

Echoing these sentiments, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) amplified the concerns in her own post.

“CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump – a deal that looks like bribery,” Warren said. “America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons. Watch and share his message.”

Warren has been vocal about perceived corruption in such settlements, previously introducing a “Presidential Library Anti-Corruption” bill in response to similar payouts to Trump’s library by companies like Paramount, Meta, Disney, and X.

These reactions demonstrate a broader Democratic pushback against what critics see as corporate capitulation to Trump, potentially to secure favorable regulatory outcomes for mergers like Paramount’s with Skydance.

However, skeptics question if this is more partisan theater than genuine concern, given the show’s history of left-leaning content.

CBS’s Defense: Financial, Not Political

CBS has firmly denied any political motivations, stating that the cancellation is “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” The network emphasized, “It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

Executives point to industry-wide declines in late-night viewership and rising costs as the driving factors, with plans to retire the franchise entirely after Colbert’s final season in May 2026.

Colbert’s Defiance and the Settlement Backdrop

Colbert himself addressed the speculation with “humor” in a recent monologue, joking about potential pressure from new owners:

“Some of the TV typers out there are blogging that once Skydance gets CBS, the new owner’s desire to please Trump could put pressure on late night host and frequent Trump critic Stephen Colbert. Okay, but how are they going to put pressure on Stephen Colbert if they can’t find him?”

The controversy stems from Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump over allegations of deceptive editing in a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris during the 2024 election, which Trump claimed amounted to election interference. Trump claims that the actual settlement amount to between $31 and $35 when factoring in deals for extras like PSAs.

Veteran producer Rome Hartman called this settlement a “fundamental betrayal of 60 Minutes and CBS News,” while anchor John Dickerson highlighted the company’s own admission that the lawsuit was “without merit.”

Analysis: A Chilling Effect on Media?

The Late Show, which debuted with David Letterman in 1993 and evolved under Colbert into a platform for liberal satire and Democratic guests, has targeted Trump with a nonstop barrage of criticism since 2015.

As Paramount eyes its merger with Skydance later this year, some speculate regulatory hurdles under Trump could incentivize settlements to avoid friction. Yet, while Democrats like Warren and Schiff push political conspiracy narratives, the idea that Colbert’s over-the-top meltdown at his parent company coupled with the show’s blatant bias contributed to its downfall holds merit—perhaps signaling viewer fatigue with one-sided Democratic cheerleading amid declining ratings.

This cancellation may simply reflect the market’s rejection of partisan late-night fare, rather than a grand political scheme. It could demonstrates the challenges of biased media in today’s divided America.
