Disney has not announced an exact reopening date, though it states the attraction will return sometime next year with new enhancements. When it reopens, guests can expect some big changes to the iconic ride’s look and narrative.
New Concept Art Released
Disney has released concept art and limited narrative details about a new show scene: Rainbow Caverns. The scene is expected to feature glowing mineral pools, fluorescent cave formations, and a colony of animated bats. Lighting and audio will shift from tranquil to tense, reflecting a tone change as riders travel deeper into the caverns. While these features are confirmed in official previews, further elements remain unannounced.
The rainbow imagery caused many to wonder whether Disney is making some kind of PRIDE statement in this attraction, but there has been no confirmation from the House of Mouse that this is the case.

These updates follow a narrative shift introduced by Disney in previous years. The ride now centers on Barnabas T. Bullion, a fictional mining magnate (inspired by legendary imagineer Tony Baxter) whose attempts to extract gold from Big Thunder Mountain were met with supernatural resistance. The story casts the mountain as a living force, with earthquakes and cave-ins serving as signs of nature pushing back.
This story has remained in place across both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions of the attraction.

As of late August 2025, Disney has reiterated that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen in 2026, though no date has been finalized. The full extent of new effects, scenes, and technical changes will likely be revealed closer to reopening.
Changes to the Tracks
According to public construction permits and official updates, the overhaul involves a complete track replacement, electrical upgrades, and thematic revisions. Construction filings list multiple contractors, including Coastal Steel Inc., DPR Construction, and Icarus Exhibits. Permits for these contractors are set to expire between March 13, 2026, and April 15, 2026, suggesting that the project is intended to conclude before or around the spring break period.

Site photos from mid‑2025 show that major physical updates are underway. Refurbishment efforts include repainting building exteriors, installing new track segments, and updating show elements in and around the queue area. A crane that was previously visible over the site has been removed, and new ride envelope testing vehicles have appeared on the track. These are used to ensure that the ride system meets operational safety and clearance requirements.
Too Many Changes?
The refurbishment coincides with wider changes across Frontierland. Starting July 7, 2025, Disney will close Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat. These closures will make way for a new Cars-themed expansion called Piston Peak National Park, which will border Big Thunder Mountain. Disney has stated that the two areas will be linked through consistent environmental design, including shared geology and natural features.

Many fans lamented the closure of these iconic attractions. With changes being made to another beloved attraction, some fans are skeptical of Disney’s artistic choices.
Time will tell whether the changes made win fans’ hearts, or if the reopening becomes another “Where are the good ole days moment?”
