For nearly a week, extremist game developers have celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk, and have been met with an uproar of gamers calling them out. Some have lost their jobs, some have flown under the radar, and others have flown under the radar. Now, a Steam curator list seeks to spotlight game studios whose devs have celebrated the death of Charlie Kirk.

Gamers React to the Death of Charlie Kirk

Following the tragic death of the renowned American debater and political organizer Charlie Kirk on September 10th, both sides of the political aisle immediately exploded with commotion. Many individuals went online to express their feelings on the matter, with supporters, allies, and friends coming together to mourn the young father. Some political adversaries, even, honorably set their ideological differences aside in order to pay their respects.

Others, however, have cheered, and seized the tragedy as an opportunity to spread rumors and defame the deceased. Such derisive celebration was not exclusively expressed by anonymous users online, but also by high-profile game studios and developers, such as Bethesda and Sucker Punch.

In response, an unknown individual made it his personal mission to compile a list of any games which were created directly by, or in association with these developers. On September 13th, the curator list known as “CharlieTweetsDetected” was launched, and can now be viewed on Steam.

As of this writing, the project has garnered over 28,000 followers.

The Curator’s Impartial Intentions

According to a conversation this reporter had with the list’s author, CharlieTweetsDetected was inspired by the highly successful “Sweet Baby Inc Detected” curator list of 2024.

“I was inspired by the SBI detected curator and its success,” the page’s creator said. “First, I saw saw the infamous Ghost of Yotei dev tweet, and was annoyed, but thought it was isolated. Then I saw a particularly callous tweet from a game called Caravan SandWitch. This wasn’t just a rogue dev, this was the game’s official twitter page. The tweet read ‘what a week, our game came out and a fascist got 360 no scoped’. That sent me over the edge.

The author of the list isn’t afraid to express his own political beliefs online, but the stated intent of the project is not inherently partisan. The curator says he isn’t bothered by the personal politics of individual developers.

Later in our conversation he added: “This isn’t about woke vs. unwoke. It’s about violence vs peace.”

Both publicly and privately he has specified that he does not wish for developers to be harassed as a consequence of CharlieTweetsDetected. Instead, the aim is to de-radicalize the industry.

“I read a term from the left some years ago called stochastic terrorism.” He explained, “It’s basically language someone uses to help someone else justify violence against you. Its not specifically ‘hey go shoot that guy’ but it’s labels.

He later added, “I’m very thankful and blessed, and hope this can also share my faith in Jesus. This isn’t a harassment campaign, its an accountability one. I don’t want anyone in the community to contact these devs.”

Negative Reviews for Studios Which Celebrate Charlie Kirk’s Death

The author has included multiple large studios, meaning all their titles, both new and old, have been indicted.

Games such as Fallout: New Vegas and Quake were both released over a decade ago, and none of the developers responsible for those games still work at those companies. However, they are not immune to to receiving a negative review from the curator, as the studio still benefits from sales and player retention.

This is the review which can be found on multiple Fallout titles, and any other game released by Bethesda.

“In a now deleted tweet, the Bethesda twitter account posted a screenshot from Indiana Jones implying they don’t care that a fascist is gone,” the review reads. “A week out from sept 10th, it’s a thinly veiled ref on Kirk.”

Or this one, which can be found on Quake.

“Nightdive studio head when Trump was pew pew’ed that supporters deserved it too,” the review says. “This rhetoric is what I’m trying to put an end to.”

However, there is potential for these titles to be removed from the list in the future.

If the company fires the individual, I will call that out, but I will not remove the entry UNTIL the company apologizes on their behalf,” the curator said.

Certain games, however, will have no such hope. If a developer has publicly disrespected or made fun of the late commentator, then any negative reviews from CharlieTweetsDetected on their games are to remain permanently. As an example, Studio Plane Toast, the developer for Caravan SandWitch, has both shared and authored numerous posts online defaming Charlie Kirk and making light of his death.

The Positive Side

The user explained that he wasn’t expecting the list to gain such notoriety, and that he hopes to assist gamers in the purchasing process.

“I would also like to mention I didn’t expect this level of response,” he said. “I expected maybe 100 people might join and save some money or find an alternative.

As part of this goal, a section of the curator list is dedicated to leaving positive reviews, encouraging players to “Support these devs!” This portion features games from a mixed bag of individuals, ranging from those who have defended Charlie Kirk, to others who have simply disavowed political violence.

The curator chooses to remain anonymous online, though he has a Youtube channel known as “Kayfabe Media” where he does gaming streams, as well as an X account where he posts updates.

Studios Must Intervene

So long as companies are implementing policies to prevent failures such as Concord, they should consider cracking down on employees who could ruin other projects with pro-violence rhetoric.

Political polarization has more than spilled into the gaming scene, and it’s incumbent upon studios to address this in a way that will put the minds of consumers at ease.

What are your thoughts on the gaming industry’s response to the Charlie Kirk tragedy? Will you check out this Charlie Kirk steam list? Do you believe this project will be able to succeed? Sound off in the comments and let us know!

It’s been really eye opening for everyone to see how those who oppose “hate speech” don’t care one bit about genuine hatred.

Some Loser

I wouldn’t say that, if you’d have paid attention then you’d have seen this back as early as 2016.

Glad you covered this. I joined this curator a couple days ago. Happy I found them. Will keep voting with my wallet.

I appreciate his efforts. This list follows the principle of not giving money to people who hate you. Most of these studios are already on my personal blacklist for being woke clowns, but still.
