Actress and filmmaker Kristen Stewart has expressed interest in directing a high-budget remake of Twilight, the 2008 vampire romantic drama that brought her international recognition. She made the remarks during interviews at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on January 4, 2026.

Stewart, who played Bella Swan in all five original Twilight Saga films, discussed returning to the franchise in a creative role rather than as an actor.

“Imagine if we had a huge budget and a bunch of love and support,” she said. “I don’t know — I would love to readapt. Yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake. I’m doing it! I’m committed!”

The actress has recently expanded her career to include directing. Her feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water (2025), drew attention at festivals and led to her inclusion on Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch” list.

Career Context and Transition to Directing

Stewart, 35, first gained widespread recognition for her role as Bella Swan. Twilight, adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel, was released in 2008 and followed by four sequels through 2012. The franchise grossed billions of dollars worldwide and significantly raised Stewart’s profile in Hollywood.

In recent years, she has focused on independent and auteur-driven projects both in front of and behind the camera. Her shift toward directing has been noted in industry reporting as part of a broader creative evolution. Stewart remarked, “I’ve been working on other people’s films for my whole life, since I was nine years old and I feel like everything’s been building to this moment to find a little space for myself. It’s just what I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”

Reflections of the Franchise

Stewart spoke about the directors of the original films—Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, David Slade, and Bill Condon—acknowledging their contributions and describing how each brought distinct qualities to the story.

“They were so themselves and weird and kind of like, squirrelly, and just so present in that time when they didn’t really know what they were yet, like before they blew up,” she said.

Stewart remarked that the films reflected their time and suggested that revisiting the material with new resources and perspective could be interesting.

She then emphasized that any remake would require substantial support and funding to succeed. She reiterated her respect for the original directors while noting the potential creative opportunities that a new approach could offer.

Industry Reaction and Broader Context

Media coverage has highlighted Stewart’s remarks in the context of Hollywood’s ongoing trend of revisiting successful franchises. Lionsgate, which produced the original films, has previously explored extensions of the Twilight universe, including television adaptations. Stewart’s comments add to public discussion, though no official projects have been confirmed.

Stewart continues to balance acting with directorial projects. Her recent work behind the camera reflects a shift in her career toward roles that offer greater creative control. Perhaps she will revisit her most famous role, from the other side of the camera.
