A recent announcement from Hasbro has given Voltron fans hope that the Henry Cavill film will go to theaters. In a February 4th press release, the toymaker said it formed a licensing deal with Amazon MGM Studios to produce action figures, toys, and roleplay products for the live-action adaptation of the iconic cartoon. Major toy licensing programs are typically tied to wide-release franchise films, where theatrical marketing campaigns help drive merchandise sales.

CosmicBookNews notes this is the first meaningful update since rumors circulated that the Voltron film would go straight to streaming.
A Franchise-Focused Future
Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to Voltron in 2022, but Cavill didn’t become attached until October 2024. While the story details have remained a closely guarded secret, Voltron will be based on the popular 1980s anime about a team of space explorers who pilot a giant super robot known as Voltron. The animated series ran for two seasons and later launched three spinoffs. The Voltron franchise also extended to comic books, toys, and video games. Despite its relatively short original run, Voltron has remained a durable brand through reboots, collectibles, and streaming-era revivals.
The plan to release toys alongside the live-action film aligns with the company’s broader franchise portfolio, according to Tim Kilpin, President of Toy, Licensing, and Entertainment at Hasbro. Kilpin added, “Our collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios will further strengthen the franchise’s longevity and unlock new opportunities to engage both longtime fans and new audiences alike.”

It’s Kilpin’s use of the word “longevity” that has some Voltron fans feeling optimistic about a theatrical release, as it suggests a multi-year plan with the studio. Additionally, Hasbro tends to take a “franchise-first” approach. The company has previously worked with theatrical tentpoles like G.I. Joe and Transformers, leading some to believe that Amazon MGM will give Voltron a similarly high-profile release.
In the meantime, Amazon MGM has another live-action adaptation already positioned as a major theatrical release.
The Nostalgia Factor

The massive success of the trailer for Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe — which arrives in theaters on June 5 — suggests that the studio is following through on its promise to expand its theatrical releases. Like Voltron, it’s based on a popular cartoon property with strong nostalgia appeal for Gen X audiences. If Masters of the Universe does well at the box office, it could be another good sign for Voltron.
Release Strategy and Box Office Outlook
Amazon MGM Studios has yet to provide a release date for Voltron. However, the toy deal with Hasbro suggests the marketing push may already be getting underway, even as the film remains in post-production.
Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice) co-wrote and directed Voltron. Along with Cavill, the cast includes Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista, Rita Ora, and others. Cavill, who will next be seen in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander, remains a strong box office draw whose appeal extends beyond the Voltron fanbase.

While a hybrid or streaming-first release cannot be ruled out, the Hasbro deal suggests the studio isn’t treating the film as a side project. With Masters of the Universe, Amazon appears to be leaning into nostalgia-based properties with merchandising potential. Combined with Hasbro’s emphasis on franchise longevity and its history of working with major theatrical brands, all indicators point toward a theatrical release.
