The conversation surrounding Dean Cain’s exclusion from GalaxyCon has taken a new direction. Now, Matthew Marsden has come out in support of his fellow actor. What’s more, Marsden backed an idea from Geeks + Gamers personality Jay — better known to fans as Drunk3PO — to launch a new convention.
When voices on one side of the political divide tell the other to ‘start your own’ event or platform, sometimes they do exactly that.
A Question of Values
On February 3, Cain, known for playing Superman on the ’90s TV series Lois & Clark, posted on X that he would not be invited to GalaxyCon because his views didn’t align with the event’s values. GalaxyCon had previously advertised a “Stars of Superman” event, featuring three of the most recent actors to portray the Man of Steel, making Cain’s absence especially noticeable.

Cain, who has been outspoken on law enforcement, matters of faith, and national politics, politely asked for clarification as to what “values” GalaxyCon leadership found objectionable. He later engaged with GalaxyCon leadership in what he described as a civil conversation. However, GalaxyCon’s decision remained unchanged.

The report had already sparked considerable backlash in the fan community before Marsden weighed in. The actor shared Cain’s original post, noting, “We keep trying to tell ya…” He’s not just another fan — Marsden is an established entertainment figure who has worked with Michael Bay, Ridley Scott, and Sylvester Stallone. Like Cain, he has received industry pushback for his political views.

In response, Jay, who has hosted Marsden on YouTube livestreams, suggested that the two of them and Cain launch their own alternative fan event. “Wow!! Time to do our own thing, you down @RealDeanCain and @matthewdmarsden,” Jay said in an X post.
Marsden replied immediately: “Oh, yes.”
A New Convention
The exchange didn’t just represent a sign of solidarity with Cain. It also showed fans and media personalities aligning around a common goal. While actors may want to engage with fans, conventions can provide a safety buffer and place some necessary restrictions on access. The idea of alternative events is nothing new, but launching one must overcome many hurdles, including reluctance from talent themselves.

However, Marsden’s support of a Geeks + Gamers convention may add the needed credibility to create something new. The actor noted in a follow-up post, “I keep telling people that they need to vote with their feet. The backlash here is justified. Now, let’s have @GeeksGamersCom, @Drunk3po make their own con and take the power back!!!”
A Proactive Response
When the values of event organizers don’t align with those of the talent or the fans, they can cease being facilitators and become barriers. Marsden’s call for fans to “vote with their feet” may resonate because they are ready to do so when and if such an opportunity presents itself.

Whether the exchange between Jay and Marsden ultimately leads to a Geeks + Gamers convention remains uncertain. But the response to Cain’s exclusion has already expanded beyond criticism into discussion of alternatives — suggesting that, for some fans and creators, the focus is shifting from protest to building something new.
