Daniel Radcliffe has asked journalists and fans not to inundate the cast of the upcoming Harry Potter HBO series with questions about him and his former co-stars. He made the request during an interview about the production’s early reception and public response.
In the interview, Radcliffe mentioned calls to “look after these kids” — referring to the new actors cast in the series. Still, he pointed to how frequently he and his co-stars are brought into conversations with the new cast. He suggested that comparing the young performers to the original film actors could create unnecessary pressure.

“When these kids got cast, there’s a whole thing around the internet being like, ‘We have to look after these kids,’” Radcliffe said. “If you really mean that, then one of the things you can do is don’t ask about us — me, Emma [Watson] and Rupert [Grint] — all the time. I would like not to be weird spectral phantoms in these children’s lives.”
New Cast, New Expectations
HBO produces the series, which will adapt Harry Potter across multiple seasons. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout portrays Ron Weasley.
Radcliffe said he hopes audiences will appreciate the project on its own terms rather than through the lens of the original films. He described the series as “a new, different thing,” showcasing his view that the actors deserve creative space.

The series will indeed take a different approach. Each book will receive its own season, giving producers more time to explore the story.
At the Max showcase last December, showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner explained this.
“(The movie adaptation) is a hard act to follow no doubt; it’s something to take those book – so rich – and to pack them into two hours is extraordinary, but we get a bigger sandpit to play in and that really excites me as we get to really dig in, we get to explore Hogwarts, we will see things we haven’t seen.” She continued, “we have the luxury of long form storytelling; we have eight hours to tell this first book so we can dig into the depths and real crevices of Hogwarts and juxtapose and create similarities between the muggle and magic world, to dig into that with beautiful attention to detail, it’s incredibly daunting, but we are obsessed!”
Radcliffe’s Perspective on the Franchise
In the same interview, Radcliffe reflected on the changing nature of the franchise and how it feels to see a new generation stepping into the roles he once played. He said that watching the young actors begin their journey has given him appreciation for his early experiences and the support he received from his own parents when he was a child actor.

Radcliffe also made a prediction about McLaughlin’s future in the role, saying “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me.” He connected this view to how his craft has evolved since the original films.
Industry and Public Reaction
The Harry Potter franchise has a long history of fan interest. The HBO series continues to draw significant media attention. Radcliffe’s appeal to limit repetitive comparisons reflects broader entertainment industry discussions about how legacy projects can support new talent while managing devoted audience expectations.
