Variety is facing backlash after attempting to link brief comment from J.K. Rowling on the new Harry Potter trailer to the author’s views on gender politics.

When the trailer for HBO Max’s adaptation dropped, many fans eagerly anticipated Rowling’s reaction. Rather than posting the video or issuing a statement, the author simply replied on X to another user: “It’s going to be incredible. I’m so happy with it.”

That short, positive response sparked some criticism from fans concerned about character changes in the show, particularly the casting of Severus Snape, which many feel does not match the book’s description. Those points are relevant to the conversation.

Yet Variety chose to spin the story in an entirely different direction, emphasizing an unrelated J.K. Rowling controversy.

Variety Frames the Debate

Variety headlined its article, “J.K. Rowling Says ‘I’m So Happy’ With HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Right After Celebrating the Olympics for Banning Trans Women From Female Events.” The framing is unmistakable. Instead of focusing on Rowling’s positive response to the Harry Potter trailer, as many readers anticipated, the trade seized the moment to insert political commentary.

The article opens, not with a discussion of the trailer, but a news item. Earlier in the day, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had determined it would not allow men who identify as women to compete in women’s events. On her X account, Rowling called the decision a “welcome return to fair sport for women and girls,” while also criticizing the committee for acting too late. Her comments reflect a position she has voiced for nearly a decade.

Yet Variety devotes almost the entire article to recounting Rowling’s history defending women-only spaces. It is not until the final paragraph that the Harry Potter trailer is even mentioned—framed as “quick praise” following the IOC ruling. Whether J.K. Rowling intended to shift the conversation is open to debate.

Variety’s phrasing clearly aims to shape reader perception.

The Internet Calls Out the Spin

Many users online were quick to call out Variety for attempting to link two seemingly unrelated events. A common refrain in the replies to an X post echoed the same question: what does opposing men competing in women’s sports have to do with Harry Potter? Others argued that the upcoming television series will ultimately succeed or fail on its own merits, regardless of how the trade chooses to frame the story.

This latest article comes less than a week after Variety published a piece that used the death of Chuck Norris to question U.S. involvement overseas, even going so far as to label Walker, Texas Ranger as “cop-aganda.” Together, these examples suggest a broader editorial pattern of redirection.

The Real Story

The release of a new Harry Potter adaptation was always bound to invite controversy. Many would prefer the conversation to center on the show’s look and tone. Rowling’s involvement has made it difficult to avoid broader debates. Even so, this latest effort by Variety to push the social views of J.K. Rowling to the forefront feels conspicuously deliberate.

At its core, however, the story remains simple—J.K. Rowling is pleased with how the series is shaping up, regardless of how Variety chooses to frame it.

she was happy about it. most of this trash was her idea from some time ago, like that terrible stage play.

jk is just as retarded as any of these losers.

Yes, she’s a feminist and loony left (with the tiny, and reasonable, exception of not wanting perverted men lurking in her daughters’ loo facilities, or whatever).

Yeah people defended JKR but she’s actively happy with the race swapping subversion. Now of course it will be financially beneficial for her to be positive about it, but she clearly is a progressive who supported the very same harmful woke ideas. She simply drew a line at her own identity group being diluted. Britishness can be diluted into nothingness, but not womanhood. The original books/movies were diverse enough. If you want a timeless classic, you do not need to change it for a “modern audience”.

Don’t get me wrong, she’s still right about the troons. Although I do think she’s too lenient. They’re sub humans who manipulate children into their cult for the sake of their own validation. These selfish people always lecture you about empathy too when the truth is that people treated them the right way in the 20th century. Our problem is not our lack of tolerance, it’s having too much. I can’t comprehend how we’ve allowed things to go so far that we’ve allowed primary schools and children’s media to be subverted by these twisted individuals.

Variety = that gay cunt, nodding like a spastic, trying to get celebs to slag off MAGA.

Hold up a second. I thought sex and gender were different constructs. If that’s true then why would they be mad at the Olympics banning Trans women from FEMALE events? The believe that trans women are men but acknowledge them being biologically Male right?

Oh wait nvm it’s about gaslighting and emotional blackmail. Same thing with biological sex being listed on passports being “transphobic”. I’d also like to know why if men are so privileged, they’d go ahead and actively identify as a “marginalised” (I wish) community.
