While the first trailer for Amazon MGM Studios’ Masters of the Universe leaned into comedy, the latest one puts the spotlight on action—and establishes the stakes. This doesn’t appear to just be the story of Prince Adam returning to Eternia. If the new footage is any indication, it’s about He-Man battling to save his home from the dark forces that have overrun it.

Comparisons between the live-action film and the iconic ’80s cartoon are already sparking lively online debates. From Skeletor’s voice to Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and the look of Eternia, it seems everyone has an opinion.
Setting the Stakes
The trailer opens with Prince Adam being dragged by Skeletor’s henchmen and thrown onto a dungeon floor, but it quickly shifts to a more hopeful tone as he rallies his allies before a battle. After glimpses of several iconic characters, the camera pulls back to reveal the legendary Castle Grayskull.

The scene then moves to Adam on Earth. Notably, the pronouns joke that stirred controversy in the first trailer is absent this time. Adam explains that he has been trying to return home, that Skeletor has devastated Eternia, and that he feels personally responsible. If the film can convey themes of loss and redemption with sincerity, He-Man’s story may resonate far beyond longtime fans.

With the stage set, the remainder of the trailer is focused on the action, as Adam takes up his sword and transforms into He-Man. The battles unfold entirely on Eternia this time. Fans will remember that the earlier trailer hinted some of the conflict comes onto Earth.
The moments generating the most discussion feature Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor, which has sparked intense debate among fans.
Creative Choices Put Skeletor in the Spotlight
While Leto’s face remains hidden behind Skeletor’s iconic skull, he provides the character’s voice. Unlike the high-pitched, hammy delivery of the original cartoon, Leto opts for a deeper, more traditionally menacing tone. For some fans, this shift is one of the more jarring changes in the new adaptation.

Other fans haven’t forgotten director Travis Knight’s comment that Skeletor is “the embodiment of toxic masculinity.” What he meant by the remark remains open to interpretation, but what’s clear is that it put many fans on high alert.

The director saying Skeletor is “the embodiment of Toxic Masculinity” killed any desire I had for this. I was a huge MOTU fan as a kid & was hoping this would be good, but I’m sick of all this modern garbage. Skeletor is an evil skull-faced wizard. Nothing to do with masculinity. pic.twitter.com/Oy0PbhtygL

Others remain skeptical about the heavily CGI animated world.
Live-action? About 75% computer garbage. Movies used to be about photography!

Still, the general response seems to be optimistic.
SERVE a beloved IP by telling GREAT stories & not FORCE the IP to tell your personal stories & ideologies. We’ll see if they actually come through.

Fun, Fantasy, and Franchise Potential
After the success of Project Hail Mary, Amazon MGM Studios may have another hit on its hands. The new Masters of the Universe trailer points to a film that, like the Ryan Gosling–led blockbuster, aims to deliver pure, crowd-pleasing fun. If it delivers on its promise, this could be the start of a franchise, and new era of He-Man adventures.

To each their own, but I hated it. I grew up with He-Man and MotU and this feels nothing like it. The trailer manages to be too gritty and dark and too bland at the same time. And “themes of loss and redemption” are not what I want in a He-Man movie. The franchise lends it self much more for simple, fairy tale like heroics then anything else. The need to make it too “theme-y” instantly makes it feel too “modern audience” for my taste. But maybe old school He-Man fans are just not the target audience. Or it’s just me, what do I know. Anyway, I have not excitement nor faith in this project.
Too gritty and dark? I certainly didn’t get that vibe from it, with all the mcu level jokes it tended to make. I doubt the movie will be anything grand, especially with all the race swaps going on as per usual with modern movies.
That being said, “themes of loss and redemption” were all over the old 80s show in some form or another. One episode had He-Man believe he’d killed someone and the entire thing was a downer episode about his regret and depression over it. So much so he attempted to give back the power because he decided he was unworthy of it.
Doesn’t seem like you remember much about it.
Cannot trust woke Hollywood, not one iota. Guys, movies that were made last century (give or take a few gems up to 2015 or so) are all we’re gonna get, in terms of The Great Movies.
