Comedian Nate Bargatze announced that tickets for his theatrical film debut, The Breadwinner, will be discounted at participating theaters. Calling it the “Nate Rate,” Bargatze said that as ticket prices rise, he wants families to enjoy going to the movies together at an affordable price.

While studios do not control ticket prices, The Hollywood Reporter notes that both AMC Theatres and Cinemark agreed to offer reduced pricing. As theater attendance has become more expensive in recent years, Bargatze seems less focused on maximizing box office returns and more interested in bringing audiences back to cinemas. For now, theaters appear willing to test the idea.

A Family-Friendly Pitch

In the caption of the Instagram video announcing the Nate Rate tickets for The Breadwinner, Nate Bargatze said:

“As many of you know, my new movie The Breadwinner comes out in theaters May 29. I remember going to the movies with my family growing up and it didn’t break the bank. I want to get back to that, which is why I came up with a special ticket deal to get you lower prices at participating theaters. We’re calling it the Nate Rate. Every Nate Rate deal is a little different, so check your local theater’s website to figure out your Nate Rate.”

The tone of the trailer and the Nate Rate promotion reinforces Bargatze’s image as “the nicest man in standup.” His discount also echoes comments he made at this year’s CinemaCon.

“I want people to come out together as families. I don’t plan to go to streaming,” he told theater owners at the event. “I want to sell tickets.”

A Modest Comedy in a Blockbuster Era

The Breadwinner was written by Nate Bargatze and Dan Lagana, and directed by Eric Appel for Sony Pictures. The film stars Bargatze and Mandy Moore as Nate and Katie, parents to three daughters. After Katie lands an opportunity through Shark Tank, Nate is left managing life at home.

Online reactions to the trailer have been measured, with some viewers comparing the film to Mr. Mom and similar family comedies. Unlike the effects-heavy superhero and video game films studios increasingly rely on to draw audiences from home theaters, The Breadwinner appears modest by comparison. Still, families may be willing to overlook the familiar premise and smaller production budget if tickets for The Breadwinner remain affordable.

What Bargatze appears to be offering is more than just a movie, but a return to shared experiences. In his video, the comedian emphasizes that the film is for everyone, from grandparents and kids to even the family pets.

Can Affordable Tickets Bring Families Back?

Whether or not The Breadwinner proves to be a winner with critics and audiences remains to be seen. But in this case, the film’s true success may depend on whether it can bring families back into theaters together.

Discounted tickets alone will not revive the theatrical experience, but they may help remove one of the biggest barriers keeping audiences home. At a time when studios are focused on blockbuster spectacle and premium pricing, Nate Bargatze is betting that affordability and familiarity still matter. If families respond, the “Nate Rate” could become more than just a marketing gimmick.
