Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey is once again at the center of controversy after actress Lupita Nyong’o defended the film’s casting choices and described the ensemble as “representative of the world.”
Nyong’o, who is playing Helen of Troy in Nolan’s reimagining of the classic Greek epic, addressed the backlash in an interview with Elle that was later highlighted by Variety. Some critics have questioned whether the film’s casting reflects the source material and ancient Greek setting at all.
“This is a mythological story,” Nyong’o said. “I’m very supportive of Chris’ intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”
Critics Question Whether The Odyssey Should Be “Representative of the World”
That particular line — “Our cast is representative of the world” — has sparked renewed debate online because many fans argue The Odyssey is not intended to represent the entire world. It’s a story deeply rooted in ancient Greek mythology, culture, geography, and history.

Homer’s Odyssey specifically centers on Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca following the Trojan War. The narrative is intrinsically tied to Greek identity and Mediterranean mythology. Critics of Nolan’s casting approach argue that treating the material as a modern globalized narrative rather than a culturally specific Greek story fundamentally changes the nature of the work.
Some online commentators have even argued that Hollywood would never apply the same logic to mythological stories tied to African, Asian, or Indigenous cultures. The criticism is not simply about race-swapping individual roles, but about what many see as an increasingly selective application of “cultural authenticity” standards in modern filmmaking.
Helen of Troy Casting Sparks Further Controversy
The backlash intensified after it was revealed Nyong’o would portray Helen of Troy, the legendary figure frequently described as “the most beautiful woman in the world” and “the face that launched a thousand ships.”

Variety highlighted criticism from commentator Matt Walsh, who stated that “not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.” Elon Musk also reportedly weighed in, claiming Nolan cast Nyong’o because he “wants the awards.”
Variety was (of course) quick to frame these comments as racially motivated.
Lupita Nyong’o Says Her Version of Helen Goes Beyond Physical Beauty
Nyong’o argued that her approach to Helen goes beyond physical beauty.

“You can’t perform beauty,” Nyong’o said. “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks? That’s the thing about doing such a well-known text, which has been studied and interpreted and derived from. The research could be endless. The good thing about working with a writer like Chris is that it’s on the page. The investigation starts with the pages you’re given. That’s what I based it on.”
However, the controversy surrounding The Odyssey extends far beyond Nyong’o alone.

Travis Scott and Elliot Page have also faced backlash tied to their involvement in the film, with critics questioning whether Nolan’s adaptation is prioritizing modern Hollywood messaging over historical and mythological authenticity.
Nyong’o framed the diversity of the cast as one of the production’s strengths.

“It’s quite something to be a part of The Odyssey, because it is so grand,” she said. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time.”
To some critics, Nyong’o’s phrasing may only intensify concerns surrounding the project. Her statement that the cast is “occupying the epic narrative of our time” has already sparked debate online, with some interpreting the comment as symbolic of Hollywood reshaping culturally specific stories into modern ideological reinterpretations rather than preserving their original historical identity.

The debate also arrives at a time when audiences are increasingly divided over Hollywood’s approach to legacy stories and historical material. Recent years have seen repeated arguments over whether established myths, folklore, and historical narratives should be modernized to reflect contemporary values or preserved as products of their original cultures and time periods.
Christopher Nolan has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected filmmakers, but The Odyssey is already becoming one of his most polarizing projects long before audiences have even seen a trailer.
