ABC’s The View has found itself at the center of another controversy after co-host Sunny Hostin appeared to call for an Andor-style “rebellion” or “resistance” against President Trump and Republicans during a recent episode of the Behind the Table podcast.

The comments immediately raised eyebrows online because Andor is not simply a story about vague political “resistance.” The Disney+ series is specifically centered around the formation of an armed insurgency against the Galactic Empire in the Star Wars universe. Characters in the show engage in bombings, assassinations, theft, sabotage, and violent uprisings as part of their campaign against authoritarian rule.
Hostin’s remarks came during a conversation about gerrymandering, voting rights, and the Democratic Party’s response to Republicans. During the discussion, she argued Democrats needed to stop trying to be “above the fray” and instead match Republican political energy.
“You meet energy with energy,” Hostin said.
The conversation escalated when executive producer Brian Teta referenced Andor and its themes of rebellion.
“You do really have to watch Andor. Let me tell you. It’s all about the resistance,” Teta said.
Hostin responded enthusiastically: “I know! You’ve been telling me about Andor! We’re both such sci-fi and fantasy fans.”
Teta then added: “It will change your life. It’s all about forming a rebellion.”
That prompted Hostin to declare: “We need to form a rebellion. A true resistance.”
Why the ‘Andor’ Comparison Is Raising Alarm
The issue critics have with the comments is not merely the use of the word “resistance.” It’s the specific comparison to Andor, a series that portrays violent insurgency against a government.
In the Disney+ series, characters steal military payrolls to finance rebellion efforts, carry out covert attacks, engage in armed street conflicts, and participate in operations targeting government officials and facilities. The show intentionally presents the Rebel Alliance in its earliest stages.

That is why some viewers saw Hostin’s remarks as deeply irresponsible, particularly given the current political climate.
President Trump has already survived multiple assassination attempts and security scares during his political career. Against that backdrop, rhetoric invoking fictional rebellions tied to armed resistance carries far more weight than casual pop culture banter.
To be fair, Hostin also admitted during the exchange that she had not actually watched Andor yet. It’s entirely possible she didn’t fully understand the implications of the comparison she was making. But critics would argue that makes the comment even more reckless.
Referencing a series centered on violent revolution without understanding what the story actually depicts is not exactly the kind of language many expect from a nationally televised political commentator.
The View Continues Its Escalatory Political Tone
This is far from the first time The View has generated controversy over heated political rhetoric. The daytime ABC program has increasingly leaned into openly combative political commentary in recent years, especially regarding President Trump and his supporters.
During the same discussion, Hostin argued Democrats needed to abandon what she described as “gentle” politics and instead fight more aggressively.

“You know, they’re bringing knives to gunfights, and it’s not working,” she said while discussing Democratic strategy.
She also criticized Democrats for failing to provide what she called “a valuable resistance.”
Combined with the later Andor comments, the segment quickly spread online as critics accused the show of escalating rhetoric at a time when political tensions in the United States remain extraordinarily high.
The controversy also places Disney in another uncomfortable position. While The View airs under ABC, both ABC and Lucasfilm ultimately operate under the umbrella of The Walt Disney Company. That means Disney now finds itself connected to a political firestorm involving one of its daytime personalities invoking one of its own streaming franchises while discussing “rebellion” against a sitting president.
Fictional Resistance vs. Real-World Responsibility
There is an obvious difference between discussing fictional rebellion in a sci-fi setting and endorsing real-world violence. Nothing in Hostin’s comments explicitly called for physical harm.
But public figures, especially those speaking on national television, still bear responsibility for the language and imagery they invoke.
Comparing modern American politics to a fictional insurgency from Star Wars was always likely to spark backlash, especially when that franchise’s version of “resistance” involves armed conflict.

At minimum, critics argue the moment demonstrated astonishingly poor judgment. And at worst, some believe it reflects a broader trend in political media where increasingly inflammatory rhetoric is treated as entertainment until it inevitably crosses a line.
Whether Hostin intended the comment as a throwaway pop culture reference or something more serious, the backlash highlights just how combustible political language has become in 2026.

For many Americans already exhausted by escalating hostility in politics, hearing a major television personality casually suggest the country needs an Andor-style “rebellion” was always going to land badly.
