Former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid is drawing criticism after claiming that Juneteenth is the “real” Independence Day while dismissing the Fourth of July as a celebration of “slaveholders.”
During a recent episode of The Joy Reid Show titled “Why Juneteenth Is the REAL Independence Day,” Reid argued that Juneteenth represents a more meaningful celebration of freedom than America’s traditional Independence Day.

“It is the celebration of slaveholders who freed themselves from having to pay taxes to the Crown for their slave empire.”

“Juneteenth to me is the real thing that the 4th of July is,” Reid said.
The comments quickly sparked debate online, particularly after additional clips surfaced in which Reid claimed that “nobody Black I know is really excited about the 4th of July” and described Independence Day as “the celebration of slaveholders who freed themselves from having to pay taxes to the Crown for their slave empire.”
Reid’s comments quickly sparked debate online, with critics arguing that she was unnecessarily pitting two American holidays against one another.
Juneteenth and Independence Day Commemorate Different Moments in American History
At the heart of the controversy is the fact that Juneteenth and the Fourth of July celebrate two entirely different events.
The Fourth of July marks the birth of the United States and commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas were informed of their freedom following the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation.
Both are significant moments in American history.
However, critics of Reid’s comments argue that framing Juneteenth as the “real” Independence Day creates a false choice between two holidays that commemorate different chapters of the American story.

One celebrates the founding of the nation while the other celebrates a major step toward fulfilling the nation’s promise of liberty.
Rather than competing with one another, many Americans view the holidays as complementary.
The significance of Juneteenth doesn’t depend on diminishing Independence Day, just as celebrating the nation’s founding doesn’t require ignoring the injustices that existed at the time.
In many ways, Juneteenth’s importance stems from the fact that the United States continued striving to expand the freedoms articulated in its founding documents. The abolition of slavery, the passage of the Reconstruction Amendments, and later civil rights victories all became part of an ongoing effort to close the gap between America’s ideals and its reality.
Charlie Kirk’s Juneteenth Comments Resurface After Reid’s Argument
Reid’s comments have also revived a debate that emerged in 2021 when Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday.
At the time, conservative commentator Charlie Kirk argued that some activists would eventually attempt to elevate Juneteenth above Independence Day rather than treat it as an additional celebration of American history.
“This is about replacing July 4th—just like the 1619 Project is about replacing 1776,” Kirk wrote during the debate over federal recognition of Juneteenth.

Many supporters of the holiday rejected that criticism, arguing that recognizing Juneteenth did not diminish the importance of Independence Day and simply acknowledged another important milestone in American history.
Yet Reid’s recent comments appear remarkably similar to the concern Kirk was describing. Rather than simply celebrating Juneteenth, Reid explicitly framed it as the “real” version of what Independence Day should represent.
Whether one agrees with Kirk’s original opposition to the federal holiday or not, Reid’s comments have undoubtedly revived that discussion.
How Did This Become a Mainstream Media Perspective?
Perhaps the most striking aspect of the controversy isn’t Reid’s criticism of the Fourth of July itself, but the fact that she spent years as one of MSNBC’s most prominent anchors before being fired from the network last year.
For much of her career, Reid was presented as a mainstream media figure rather than a fringe activist or partisan commentator.
Yet comments like these raise questions about how perspectives that view America’s founding primarily through such a lens became so commonplace in legacy media.

For many Americans, these holidays are not in conflict. But by framing Juneteenth as the “real” Independence Day, Joy Reid transforms those milestones into rivals rather than complementary parts of the same national story.
That may explain why her comments have generated such a strong reaction. The debate was never really about whether Juneteenth deserves to be celebrated. The debate is about whether celebrating Juneteenth requires diminishing the Fourth of July.
For most Americans, the answer is no.
