The final weekend box office numbers are in for Supergirl, and the results are even worse than early estimates suggested.
After initial projections showed the DC Studios film suffering a massive second weekend decline of roughly 74%, updated box office actuals revealed that the drop was even steeper. The Milly Alcock-led superhero film ultimately fell approximately 77% from its opening weekend, continuing a difficult theatrical run for one of the first major installments in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
The updated figures also removed one of the few positive headlines surrounding the movie’s performance. While some reports initially celebrated Supergirl crossing $100 million worldwide during its second weekend, the actual numbers showed the film came up short of that milestone.
According to the updated box office data, Supergirl sat at approximately $57.4 million domestically and $42 million internationally after the weekend, for a worldwide total of $99.4 million.
Supergirl Box Office Actuals Remove $100 Million Milestone
Crossing $100 million worldwide is typically not considered a major achievement for a big-budget superhero film. However, after a disappointing opening weekend and steep second-weekend projections, the number became one of the few positive talking points surrounding the film’s theatrical performance.
The final numbers eliminated that narrative.
Instead of narrowly passing the milestone, Supergirl remained just below $100 million globally after two weekends in theaters.

That total presents a significant challenge for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios considering the cost of modern superhero filmmaking. The movie reportedly carried a production budget of roughly $170 million before accounting for marketing and distribution expenses.
Large studio releases frequently require significant global box office returns to become profitable due to those additional costs.
Young Washington Surpasses Supergirl During Its Second Weekend
Adding another unexpected development to the weekend box office race, Supergirl was surpassed by Young Washington, the historical drama focusing on the early life and military career of George Washington.
The Angel Studios release opened with approximately $19 million domestically, finishing ahead of Supergirl’s second weekend total despite coming from a much smaller studio and carrying significantly less franchise recognition.

The comparison highlights two very different approaches currently competing in the theatrical marketplace.
Supergirl arrived with decades of DC Comics history, one of the most recognizable superhero brands in entertainment, and the backing of Warner Bros. Discovery. Meanwhile, Young Washington entered theaters as a historical film built around America’s first president and released around the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Despite those differences, the smaller release was able to outperform the superhero film during the weekend.
DC Studios Continues Its Attempt to Rebuild Audience Trust
The performance of Supergirl arrives during a crucial period for DC Studios.
Following years of inconsistent box office results from DC adaptations, Warner Bros. Discovery placed Gunn and Safran in charge of creating a unified cinematic universe designed to reset the brand and restore audience confidence.
However, the early results continue to show the challenge facing the studio.

The superhero genre itself has experienced increased volatility in recent years. Films that were once viewed as guaranteed theatrical events have faced a much more unpredictable audience response.
Marvel Studios saw disappointing results from projects like The Marvels, while previous DC films including The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods also struggled commercially.
The difference is that Supergirl was positioned as part of the solution to those problems rather than a continuation of them.
Warner Bros. Faces Difficult Path Forward With DC
The steep second weekend decline creates new questions about the long-term future of the DC Universe.
A major franchise film experiencing a significant drop after opening weekend often indicates that general audience interest didn’t expand beyond the core fanbase that arrived early.
With Supergirl now below $100 million worldwide after two weekends, attention will turn to how much staying power the film can maintain in the weeks ahead.

For Warner Bros. Discovery, the goal was never simply releasing another DC movie. The goal was proving audiences were ready to follow a new era of interconnected storytelling.
The final Supergirl box office numbers suggest that rebuilding the DC brand may require more than a fresh start. It may require winning back moviegoers who have become far more selective about which franchises still deserve their attention.
