Kevin Feige Claims Secret Wars Will Create New Streamlined Marvel Universe But Won’t Reboot the MCU

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige claims Avengers: Secret Wars will simplify the Marvel Cinematic Universe and establish a new beginning for the franchise. However, he continues to reject suggestions that Marvel is planning a complete reboot.

To the frustration of many casual fans, the MCU has become increasingly complicated since Avengers: Endgame. Its original timeline now exists alongside alternate realities containing the Fantastic Four, Fox’s X-Men, and other versions of familiar heroes.

While the multiverse strategy had existed for years in the comics, bringing it to the screen across multiple mediums made it difficult for some fans to keep up. Critics also argued that allowing characters to exist across multiple universes reduced the stakes.

Some have suggested the only way to revive the MCU is with a full reboot.

Secret Wars Will Create a Single Marvel Universe

For now, Marvel appears determined to navigate its way through the complexities of the Multiverse Saga. Kevin Feige told Chinese entertainment outlet Watching Hollywood that Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will bring those increasingly complicated storylines together.

“Secret Wars will represent a beginning,” Feige said, according to a translated interview. “It will establish a streamlined, simplified, single universe that’s easier for audiences to follow.”

Although parts of that universe will remain familiar to longtime fans, Feige warned that “many, many things will be entirely new.”

That said, the decision to conclude the Multiverse Saga and streamline the MCU is being met with some ridicule online.

One user on X wrote, “Translation: We overcomplicated the Multiverse Saga and now we’re hitting the factory reset button.”

Marvel Is Planning Through 2042

Marvel is apparently treating Secret Wars as the foundation for another extended period of interconnected storytelling.

Feige revealed that Marvel executives recently discussed potential films stretching through 2042. He acknowledged that those plans will inevitably change, but the timeline demonstrates how far ahead the studio is looking.

However, the immediate priority is completing the Multiverse Saga and creating a clearer foundation for the franchise’s next era. The X-Men are expected to play a major role in that transition. Feige described Marvel’s approach to the mutants as “grand” and said the studio is carefully considering how to reintroduce them.

After several previous incarnations of the X-Men received mixed reactions, Marvel is under considerable pressure to get its version right.

Feige Insists It’s a Reset, Not a Reboot

Feige has repeatedly resisted describing Marvel’s plans as a reboot, despite acknowledging that Secret Wars will significantly reshape the MCU.

“Reboot is a scary word,” he told Variety last year. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.”

That distinction would allow Marvel to preserve popular characters and storylines while quietly replacing elements that no longer serve the franchise. Feige has also acknowledged that characters such as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers will eventually be recast, comparing the process to how MGM has handled James Bond.

How Different Will the New MCU Be?

In practice, a simplified universe containing new actors, altered histories, and previously separated characters may look remarkably similar to a soft reboot. Marvel’s reluctance to embrace that label does not change how extensive the transformation could become.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027, completing the Multiverse Saga and revealing just how much of the existing MCU survives Marvel’s supposed reset.

Whether these changes make the MCU more approachable—or leave it just as dense as before—remains to be seen.
