Guests planning a visit to Universal Epic Universe this September should be aware of an upcoming refurbishment for The Untrainable Dragon. The temporary closure will affect one of the park’s live entertainment offerings for nearly a week.

The Untrainable Dragon Refurbishment Dates

The Untrainable Dragon, located in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, is scheduled to close for refurbishment from September 15 through September 20, 2026. This marks its first refurbishment since it opened with the park May of last year.

Universal Orlando has not announced the reason for the temporary closure. The resort also has not shared details about the work that will take place during the refurbishment.

The closure is expected to affect only the stage production. No additional closures have been announced for the attractions, restaurants, or shops within the Isle of Berk.

What Is The Untrainable Dragon?

The Untrainable Dragon is a Broadway-style stage production that brings characters from DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon films to life through live performers, large-scale puppetry, music, projections, and special effects.

From Universal Orlando’s official description: “When a new dragon shows up on the Isle of Berk, the Vikings think they may have finally met their match. Hiccup and Toothless, with help from Gobber and Astrid, work together to solve the mystery of The Untrainable Dragon. Experience the wonder of dragons onstage and soaring overhead in this spectacular, music-filled, heart-warming live show.”

The production combines traditional theatrical storytelling with modern stage technology. Scenic sets move throughout the performance, projection mapping transforms the stage, and lighting and sound effects help recreate the world of Berk.

One of the production’s most recognizable features is the full-size Toothless puppet. With an almost 29-foot wingspan, the figure and Hiccup “fly” above the audience during the show. The dragon also features detailed facial movements and body articulation that allow performers to give the character expressive movements while interacting with the cast on stage.

The theater is located inside How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, one of the five themed worlds at Universal Epic Universe.

The land recreates the Viking village from the films and includes several attractions and experiences. Guests can ride Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, experience Dragon Racer’s Rally, and take part in Fyre Drill. Kids also can take the chance to run off some energy at  Viking Training Camp, a three-story playground and agility course.

Guests can also dine at various sit-down and quick-service restaurants, with one of the most famous snacks being the Mac & Cheese Cones.

Planning a Visit During the Closure

Guests visiting Universal Epic Universe between September 15 and September 20 will not be able to attend performances of The Untrainable Dragon while the refurbishment is underway.

Visitors planning trips during those dates may want to review the latest entertainment schedule before arriving. Universal Orlando updates attraction availability through its official website and mobile app, and refurbishment dates can change without notice.

For now, The Untrainable Dragon remains scheduled to reopen on September 21, 2026.
