‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Will Have 7 Additional Minutes and Connect to ‘Doomsday’

Marvel Studios is reportedly adding approximately seven minutes of new material to Avengers: Endgame when the blockbuster returns to theaters this fall.

The rerelease, officially titled Avengers: Endgame Encore, will arrive in theaters on September 25. Marvel has already confirmed that the new version will include footage connecting the 2019 film directly to Avengers: Doomsday.

However, the length and structure of that additional material have not been officially announced.

Endgame Encore Reportedly Adds Seven Minutes

Some fans had assumed the additional footage would simply serve as a coda at the end of the film. They questioned why Disney would not release it online instead of requiring audiences to buy another ticket—as if the reason were not obvious—and spend another three hours in a theater.

However, according to the X account Cryptic4KQual, Endgame Encore will feature a new introduction, additional scenes, and an ending sequence that leads directly into Doomsday. The scooper has also heard that the rerelease will run seven minutes longer than the original theatrical version.

“Take with a grain of salt,” Cryptic4KQual cautioned while sharing the rumored runtime.

The original version of Avengers: Endgame runs approximately 181 minutes. If the report is accurate, Endgame Encore would have a total runtime of around 188 minutes, or three hours and eight minutes.

Joe Russo Calls the Rerelease a “Critical Companion Story”

Although the seven-minute figure remains a rumor, Endgame co-director Joe Russo previously confirmed that footage connected to Doomsday would be added to the film.

“It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame,” Russo said during the Sands International Film Festival in April.

The filmmaker described the rerelease as a “critical companion story” and a setup for what audiences will see when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December.

“It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way,” Russo explained. “We can enhance the story of Doomsday by bridging it to Endgame and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story.”

Marvel Builds a Bridge Over the Multiverse Saga

Exactly how the footage will connect the two films remains unknown. However, Endgame introduced time travel and alternate timelines to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Those concepts could provide the foundation for the multiversal conflict involving Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

The decision also suggests that Marvel is positioning Doomsday as a more direct continuation of Endgame than the culmination of the MCU projects released during the intervening seven years. Many of the Disney+ series and theatrical films have proven divisive, resulting in weak box office performances and low viewership numbers.

With the new footage being presented as a bridge over that less successful content, Disney may be trying to bring back fans who abandoned the MCU because of its “homework” problem.

Ultimately, Marvel is returning to its most successful film to prepare audiences for the next Avengers event.

Marvel Hopes Endgame Can Rebuild Momentum

Avengers: Endgame earned approximately $2.8 billion worldwide during its original theatrical run and a 2019 rerelease. Whether seven additional minutes will be enough to convince audiences to buy another ticket remains to be seen. Yet with Avengers: Doomsday likely to be the most expensive film ever made, every ticket and every bit of momentum matters.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, less than three months after Endgame Encore begins its theatrical run.
