Supergirl Digital Release Comes After Just One Month as James Gunn’s DCU Suffers Another Embarrassing Blow

Warner Bros. appears ready to throw in the towel on Supergirl with a quick arrival on digital.

After just one month in theaters, the studio is expected to release the film on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) on July 28, an extraordinarily quick turnaround for what was supposed to be one of the cornerstone films of James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe.

While theatrical windows have become shorter in the streaming era, a move to digital after only four weeks is rarely the sign of a healthy box office run. Instead, it suggests Warner Bros. believes Supergirl has already earned virtually everything it was going to make in theaters.

For a movie carrying a reported production budget between $170 million and $186 million, that’s a stunning admission.

The Box Office Never Took Flight

Supergirl simply failed to perform.

The film has grossed roughly $70 million domestically and approximately $120 million worldwide, numbers that leave it nowhere near profitability once marketing costs and theater revenue splits are taken into account.

Some industry estimates have suggested Warner Bros. could ultimately lose well over $100 million, with more pessimistic projections placing the total losses closer to $200 million.

That makes Supergirl one of the biggest financial disappointments of the year and another difficult headline for James Gunn’s DCU.

The Internet Didn’t Ignore Supergirl—It Mocked It

One argument quickly emerged from Gunn’s defenders: that audiences simply weren’t interested in Supergirl.

That’s only part of the story.

People absolutely talked about the movie.

Unfortunately for Warner Bros., much of that conversation centered on just how badly it was performing.

DC fans spent weeks expressing disappointment over another major theatrical stumble, while Gunn’s critics openly mocked the film’s collapsing box office numbers across social media. Every new weekend estimate became another opportunity for debate over whether the DCU was already losing momentum before it had truly begun.

Even creative decisions inside the film became lightning rods.

Perhaps nothing generated more ridicule than the film’s much-discussed third-act needle drop, which quickly became one of the most mocked moments from the movie online. Rather than becoming an iconic superhero sequence audiences wanted to revisit, it became shorthand for many viewers who felt the film’s tone missed the mark.

That’s a far cry from the kind of cultural impact Warner Bros. was hoping to achieve.

James Gunn’s Gamble Looks Increasingly Risky

James Gunn arrived at DC promising a fresh start.

He repeatedly emphasized planning, quality over quantity, and rebuilding audience trust after years of inconsistency under the previous regime.

But Supergirl now joins a growing list of DC projects that have struggled to generate the level of enthusiasm Warner Bros. undoubtedly hoped for.

Greenlighting a nearly $200 million Supergirl film was always a gamble. The character has never demonstrated the kind of solo box office drawing power enjoyed by Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman.

Instead of creating a breakout franchise, Warner Bros. now appears eager to move the film to PVOD just four weeks after release.

A Fast Digital Release Speaks Volumes About Supergirl

Studios don’t rush expensive tentpole films to digital because everything is going according to plan. They do it because theatrical momentum has largely evaporated.

Warner Bros. is now hoping digital rentals and purchases can recover at least some additional revenue after the film’s disappointing theatrical performance.

That may help soften the financial blow. But it won’t change the perception surrounding the movie.

Supergirl was supposed to reinforce confidence in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Instead, it has become another source of criticism, another disappointing box office story, and now another blockbuster making an unusually fast exit from theaters.

For Warner Bros., the decision to send Supergirl to PVOD after just one month feels like an acknowledgment that the theatrical run is already over.
