Wizards of the Coast announced Thursday that it is partnering with Lucasfilm to bring Star Wars to Dungeons & Dragons in 2027. The still-mysterious collaboration will serve as the centerpiece of D&D’s appropriately named “Season of Rebellion.”

The company revealed the crossover during its Dungeons & Dragons Vision Keynote at Gen Con 2026. Darth Vader appeared onstage to close the presentation and herald the arrival of the partnership. For those unable to attend, Dungeons & Dragons also shared the announcement through its official X account.

Wizards has yet to reveal the project’s exact format, included characters, or how D&D’s fantasy-oriented rules will accommodate lightsabers, starships, and the Force.

“Star Wars is coming to D&D for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops,” Dungeons & Dragons franchise head Dan Ayoub said. “Our wide range of announcements show that we are committed to delivering more choices, and more ways for friends and family to adventure together.”

Star Wars Joins D&D’s Universes Beyond

The Star Wars project will be part of Universes Beyond, a new Dungeons & Dragons initiative that incorporates settings from outside the traditional D&D multiverse. Wizards previously used the name for Magic: The Gathering crossovers with franchises including Fallout, Final Fantasy, Doctor Who, and Marvel.

Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft will launch the tabletop role-playing game’s version of Universes Beyond on November 17. Created in collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment, the expansion will allow players to explore Azeroth, enter familiar dungeons, and confront enemies drawn from the video game’s history.

Star Wars will follow in fall 2027 as the initiative’s second major crossover. Although both projects share the Universes Beyond branding, Wizards has not indicated whether they will use comparable formats.

This will not be the first time players have explored the Star Wars galaxy through a tabletop role-playing game. West End Games launched the original Star Wars role-playing game in 1987. Wizards of the Coast later published several versions based on its d20 system, beginning in 2000 and concluding with the Saga Edition line in 2010.

Nevertheless, the newly announced project represents the first official crossover carrying both the modern Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars brands. The “Season of Rebellion” title also strongly suggests that the game will focus on the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire, although Wizards has not formally confirmed its setting.

Fans Question Whether the Crossover Will Work

Many of the initial reactions online were less than enthusiastic. Some commenters responding to the announcement on X expressed frustration that seemingly every major property now receives franchise crossovers. Others suggested that the collaboration might once have excited them but argued that both Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars have become too ideologically driven in recent years to retain the same appeal.

The collaboration also raises questions about how effectively the sweeping, cinematic momentum of Star Wars will translate into a turn-based tabletop game. With modern video games capable of placing players inside sequences seemingly lifted directly from the films, will Star Wars-themed dice rolls and resource management offer comparable excitement?

Conversely, will Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts view the project as anything more than a Star Wars skin placed over a game they already play and enjoy?

Only time will tell. Wizards plans to reveal more details later, including which products will be included in the season and when they will be released.
