Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot may still be years away, but speculation over who will join the cast continues to intensify. Now, one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars has confirmed that she has already met with the man tasked with leading the franchise’s next era.
During a recent interview with Variety, Obsession breakout star Inde Navarrette revealed that she recently met with Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier, who is developing Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film. While she stopped short of confirming any casting discussions, Navarrette admitted she would jump at the opportunity to portray one of the franchise’s most iconic mutants: Mystique.
Inde Navarrette Confirms Marvel Meeting
Following the unexpected box office phenomenon of Obsession, which reportedly grossed more than $400 million worldwide against a modest budget of under $1 million, Navarrette has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actresses.
Speaking on Variety’s Up Next podcast, she explained that the success of the film has opened countless doors.

“I’ve been taking a lot of meetings since Obsession came out,” she said. “That’s been really nice because you get to meet people and ask questions.”
Among those meetings was one with Marvel Studios.
Navarrette confirmed she recently sat down with Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts before being selected to helm Marvel’s long-awaited X-Men reboot.

Although she declined to reveal specifics about the meeting, she spoke enthusiastically about Schreier’s approach to superhero storytelling.
“I thought what Jake brought to Thunderbolts was what I used to love about Marvel,” she said. “It was character-driven, and the whole time I just couldn’t stop yapping about how much I appreciated what he did with Marvel.”
Not Every Marvel Meeting Leads to a Role
Despite immediate fan speculation that the meeting means Navarrette has already landed a part, the actress cautioned against reading too much into it.
According to Navarrette, many of the industry meetings she’s been taking simply involve conversations with filmmakers she admires rather than negotiations for specific projects.

“That’s kind of the luxury I have right now, meeting all these different kinds of people,” she said. “Not all of those meetings turn into projects, but sometimes it’s just, ‘I really want to work with you. I’ve seen this project, and this one, and this one.'”
That caveat hasn’t stopped Marvel fans from speculating, especially given Marvel Studios’ need to assemble an entirely new generation of mutants following Avengers: Secret Wars.
Mystique Is Her Dream Role
While remaining careful not to reveal anything confidential, Navarrette did offer one very intriguing clue when asked which mutant she would most like to portray.
“I mean, Mystique has always been super cool,” she said.

Mystique has long been one of Marvel’s most recognizable X-Men characters.
Previously portrayed by Rebecca Romijn in Fox’s original X-Men trilogy and later by Jennifer Lawrence throughout Fox’s prequel films, the shape-shifting mutant remains one of the franchise’s signature villains.
With Marvel Studios expected to recast nearly every major mutant after Secret Wars, fans have already begun fantasy-casting the role once again.
Marvel’s X-Men Reboot Is Beginning to Take Shape
Marvel Studios has not officially announced its cast for the new X-Men film, but pieces are beginning to fall into place.
Jake Schreier is attached to direct, while Marvel President Kevin Feige has repeatedly stated that mutants will become central to the MCU following Avengers: Secret Wars.

Several legacy X-Men actors—including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer—are set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, seemingly serving as a bridge between Fox’s universe and Marvel Studios’ eventual reboot.
If that’s the direction Marvel intends to take, casting conversations for the rest of the mutant roster may already be well underway.
A Rising Star at the Right Time
Whether Navarrette ultimately lands the role of Mystique remains to be seen, but the timing certainly makes sense.

Hollywood has a long history of signing breakout stars shortly after unexpected hits, and Obsession has rapidly elevated Navarrette into that category. Combined with Marvel Studios’ need to build an entirely new generation of X-Men, it’s hardly surprising that meetings are already happening behind closed doors.
For now, Navarrette insists it was simply an opportunity to meet a filmmaker she admires. But by openly revealing the meeting—and by specifically naming Mystique as her dream role—she has undoubtedly added another intriguing name to the growing list of actors fans will be watching as Marvel’s mutant reboot continues to take shape.
