Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to perform like a movie without a box office ceiling.

After delivering one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history, the Tom Holland-led Sony and Marvel blockbuster barely slowed down in its second frame. The film hauled in another $145 million domestically, giving it the third-biggest second weekend ever recorded.

According to Variety, Brand New Day now stands at an astonishing $655 million domestically and $1.67 billion worldwide after less than two full weeks in theaters.

And at this point, the conversation surrounding the film has moved beyond whether it will reach $2 billion.

The question is whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day could become the first movie in history to gross $1 billion domestically — and perhaps even the first to reach $3 billion worldwide.

Spider-Man Barely Slows Down

Brand New Day opened to a record-setting $355 million domestically and $932 million worldwide, immediately establishing itself as the biggest theatrical event of 2026.

Its second weekend proved that the opening wasn’t merely the result of front-loaded fan enthusiasm.

The film earned another $145 million in North America, a number that would represent an extraordinary opening weekend for virtually any other movie.

In fact, Variety notes that only one other movie released this year — Pixar’s Toy Story 5 — opened to more than Brand New Day just earned during its second weekend. Toy Story 5 debuted with $159 million.

Only two movies in history have ever delivered larger second weekends:

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens — $149 million
  • Avengers: Endgame — $147 million

That also makes Brand New Day just the eighth movie ever to earn more than $100 million during its sophomore weekend.

For a film that began its domestic run with $355 million, holding well enough to produce another $145 million is remarkable.

$655 Million Domestic — And Counting

After its second weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already accumulated $655 million at the domestic box office.

That puts one of Hollywood’s most untouchable records within sight.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has held the domestic box office crown for more than a decade with $936.6 million.

Brand New Day is now approximately $281.6 million away.

That would ordinarily represent an enormous amount of money for a film to find during the remainder of its theatrical run. But there is very little ordinary about the trajectory of Brand New Day.

The movie has already generated nearly 70% of The Force Awakens’ entire domestic lifetime gross in less than two weeks.

If its legs remain strong, the possibility of Spider-Man becoming the first film to reach $1 billion domestically can no longer be dismissed as fantasy.

It would need another $345 million from this point.

That’s a tall order. But after a $145 million second weekend, it’s suddenly a conversation worth having.

Spider-Man Is Already at $1.67 Billion Worldwide

The international numbers may be even more impressive.

After opening to $932 million worldwide, Brand New Day crossed $1 billion globally in just six days.

It has now reached $1.67 billion worldwide, meaning the film added roughly $738 million to its global total after its opening weekend.

The $2 billion milestone now appears less like a question of if and more like a question of when.

Only six films have ever reached $2 billion worldwide: Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Brand New Day needs only another $330 million to join them.

Considering it just earned hundreds of millions during its second week, that threshold could arrive quickly.

The more interesting race may now be at the very top of the all-time chart.

Could Spider-Man Actually Reach $3 Billion?

This is where things start getting crazy.

James Cameron’s Avatar currently holds the worldwide box office record with approximately $2.9 billion, though that total has been accumulated through its original theatrical release and multiple subsequent re-releases.

Avengers: Endgame sits behind it at roughly $2.7 billion, also boosted by a later theatrical expansion.

For Brand New Day to become the highest-grossing movie in history during its initial run, it would need to add approximately $1.25 billion to its current $1.67 billion total.

For $3 billion, it needs another $1.33 billion.

That remains an enormous mountain to climb.

But the fact that the possibility is even being seriously discussed after the film’s second weekend illustrates just how extraordinary its performance has been.

If Brand New Day reaches $3 billion, it wouldn’t merely become the highest-grossing film ever. It would establish an entirely new box office benchmark that no movie has previously reached.

The International Box Office Will Decide the Record

The biggest obstacle to the $3 billion dream is the same one facing any movie attempting to challenge Avatar: international audiences.

Avatar didn’t become the highest-grossing movie ever because of North America alone. Its original run was powered by an extraordinary overseas performance, and subsequent re-releases only increased that advantage.

For Brand New Day to seriously threaten Cameron’s record, Spider-Man needs to remain a global phenomenon.

So far, that’s exactly what is happening.

With $655 million of its $1.67 billion coming domestically, approximately $1.015 billion has already come from international markets.

That means Brand New Day has already crossed $1 billion overseas.

And unlike many recent Hollywood blockbusters that have relied heavily on domestic audiences, Spider-Man appears to be performing at an enormous scale on both sides of the equation.

That’s what makes $3 billion at least mathematically conceivable.

No IMAX Monopoly Required

There’s another important piece of context surrounding the movie’s performance.

Brand New Day achieved its massive opening despite Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey controlling premium IMAX screens during Spider-Man’s launch.

The Odyssey remains a major success in its own right. Variety reports the film has reached $461 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film.

It has also generated an astounding $289 million from IMAX alone, overtaking Avatar as the format’s highest-grossing release.

In other words, Spider-Man didn’t have the premium-format landscape entirely to itself while putting up these numbers.

The two movies are simultaneously producing enormous theatrical runs rather than one cannibalizing the other.

Spider-Man Has Become the Box Office Story of 2026

Whatever happens from here, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already become a historic theatrical success.

It opened to $932 million worldwide, crossed $1 billion in five days, produced the third-biggest second domestic weekend ever, reached $655 million domestically and $1.67 billion worldwide, and $2 billion is rapidly approaching.

The remaining question is how high this thing can actually go.

Reaching $3 billion still requires an extraordinary amount of business, and two weeks of incredible numbers don’t guarantee the kind of long-term legs necessary to add another $1.33 billion.

But that’s also what makes the next several weeks fascinating.

Before Brand New Day opened, surpassing Avatar would have sounded like wild speculation. After a $355 million domestic opening, it became worth watching. After a $145 million second weekend and $1.67 billion worldwide, the possibility can no longer simply be laughed away.

Spider-Man is now chasing records that Hollywood has spent years treating as virtually untouchable.

And if audiences keep showing up at anything close to this pace, Avatar may finally have something to worry about.
