Rockstar Games is turning its next look at Grand Theft Auto VI into a major streaming event.
The developer announced that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, August 27, at 3 p.m. ET. The presentation will initially be available exclusively to Netflix subscribers before arriving later that day on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official Grand Theft Auto VI website.
Rockstar has not revealed how long the presentation will run or precisely what it will contain. However, the “extended look” description suggests that viewers could receive their first substantial glimpse of gameplay, additional story details, or a behind-the-scenes look at the game’s development.

Netflix described the arrangement as a “first-of-its-kind partnership” with Rockstar Games.
“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,” Netflix executive Brandon Riegg said. “The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented.”
Premiering the presentation on Netflix gives Rockstar an opportunity to reach beyond traditional gaming audiences. Instead of attaching the footage to a PlayStation showcase or releasing it directly on YouTube, the company is treating the presentation like the debut of a major movie or television event.
Grand Theft Auto VI’s Enormous Cultural Reach
The unusual arrangement also demonstrates the enormous cultural influence of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Grand Theft Auto V arrived in 2013, meaning players have waited approximately 13 years for a new mainline installment. Rockstar confirmed that it was developing the sequel in 2022 before releasing the first trailer in December 2023.
A second trailer, released in May 2025, reportedly generated more than 475 million views across all platforms within its first day. It was finally surpassed a year later by the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is currently setting records at the box office. Rockstar and Netflix may be hoping to capture a similar degree of enthusiasm with this extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI.
However, the announcement has also sparked some backlash from gamers who see the initial Netflix exclusivity as placing what is effectively a commercial behind a paywall.
“Rockstar even making their trailers pay-to-watch is a crazy move,” one user wrote on X.

Although the video will eventually become available for free on YouTube, anyone who wants to watch it at the earliest possible moment will need a Netflix subscription.
GTA VI’s Launch Has Already Drawn Controversy
The extended presentation arrives less than three months before Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19. The game will initially be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.

Preorders opened in June, but the rollout was accompanied by controversy over the absence of a traditional physical edition. Although boxed copies will be sold at retailers, the packages will contain digital download codes rather than discs. Rockstar reportedly has no immediate plans to manufacture a disc-based version.
That decision frustrated physical-media advocates who want the ability to preserve, resell, or lend their games without depending entirely on digital storefronts and licensing systems.
However, the controversy appears unlikely to meaningfully reduce interest in the sequel.
Rockstar Turns a Commercial Into an Event
By giving Netflix subscribers an early look before releasing the presentation more widely, Rockstar is transforming another piece of marketing into a major entertainment event. Few video games could command that treatment, but Grand Theft Auto VI may be the rare release whose preview feels almost as significant as another company’s full launch.

After years of delays and more than a decade of anticipation, gamers will likely flock to the world’s largest streaming service for any new glimpse of Rockstar’s latest Grand Theft Auto title. However, for those already upset by the lack of a physical release, requiring a Netflix subscription to watch the extended look at its premiere may only deepen their frustration with the studio.
