Despite fan demand, the physical edition of GTA VI will not come on disc—a fact that appears unlikely to change anytime soon.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Rockstar Games currently has no plans to release Grand Theft Auto VI on physical discs—not at launch, and not in the months that follow. While the game will still be available at retail stores in a physical box, that box will reportedly contain only a digital download code rather than an actual game disc.

Fans Misunderstood Rockstar’s Plans

The clarification comes after widespread speculation that Rockstar’s decision to forgo discs at launch was simply a strategy to prevent leaks. Earlier reports and online rumors had suggested that a traditional disc version might arrive sometime during the holiday season.

A screenshot from Rockstar customer support circulated widely online earlier this week. In it, a representative wrote that gamers would be able to acquire a “physical copy during the following months.”

However, sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter reportedly indicated that fans had misinterpreted comments from Rockstar support representatives and that there are currently no plans to manufacture GTA VI discs at all. The “physical copy” referenced in the email referred only to the boxed edition containing a download code.

Releasing GTA VI in this manner may be an attempt to appeal to collectors while also avoiding potential legal complications. In 2021, Sony was sued for preventing third-party brick-and-mortar retailers from selling digital download codes for PlayStation games. According to The Hollywood Reporter, placing GTA VI download codes inside physical boxes represents “something of a loophole” that may satisfy some consumers and retailers.

For physical media advocates, however, the distinction is unlikely to matter. A box containing a download code still requires consumers to rely entirely on digital storefronts and online licensing systems.

A Major Moment for Physical Media

The decision represents a major milestone in the gaming industry’s gradual shift away from physical media. This is not just any game abandoning discs, but one of the most anticipated entertainment products of all time and the latest installment in one of the most successful franchises in gaming history.

While digital distribution has steadily expanded over the past decade, many major AAA releases have continued to offer disc-based versions. For many players, physical editions provide advantages that extend beyond nostalgia. Discs can often be resold, traded, collected, or preserved independently of online storefronts and licensing agreements.

Critics of an all-digital future argue that consumers lose ownership rights, flexibility, and long-term access when purchases become tied entirely to digital ecosystems. They also warn that removing physical media gives publishers greater control over pricing and reduces the ability of consumers to preserve games for future generations.

Fans Are Divided

Reaction to the news has been mixed.

Many gamers have already transitioned to digital-only consoles and will be largely unaffected by Rockstar’s decision. Others argue that if GTA VI is unavailable on disc, consumers are effectively renting the game rather than owning it.

Some fans have even called for a boycott of Rockstar Games, arguing that one of the industry’s biggest franchises should be helping preserve physical media rather than accelerating its decline.

Whether players ultimately embrace the change or continue resisting it, Grand Theft Auto VI may ultimately be remembered for more than its sales records or critical reception. The game could become the moment when the video game industry finally decided that physical media was no longer essential.
