As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues filling movie theaters, it is not just popcorn sellers who have reason to celebrate.

Tom Holland is expected to earn more than $100 million for his fourth solo adventure as Peter Parker. The staggering total places Holland among Hollywood’s highest-paid stars and confirms his status as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most valuable performers.

According to TheWrap, Holland received a base salary of at least $20 million. That figure is already approximately double the $10 million he reportedly earned for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

However, the overwhelming box-office success of Brand New Day will dramatically increase Holland’s final compensation. Sources familiar with his contract claim that backend bonuses will push his total earnings beyond $100 million.

His deal reportedly contains no cap, meaning Holland could ultimately make considerably more as the movie continues its theatrical run. Brand New Day is expected to surpass $2.5 billion, and some box-office analysts are wondering how close it will come to $3 billion.

Whatever the outcome, Holland will take home more than J. Jonah Jameson ever paid Peter Parker for pictures of Spider-Man.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Salary Has Soared

According to The Guardian, Holland earned a reported $250,000 for his Spider-Man debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. His salary increased to $500,000 for Spider-Man: Homecoming, $4 million for Spider-Man: Far From Home, and $10 million for No Way Home.

The actor’s original six-picture contract reportedly expired following No Way Home, giving his representatives an opportunity to negotiate an entirely new agreement for Brand New Day. Holland’s proven popularity and the uncertainty surrounding the superhero genre provided him with considerable leverage.

That gamble has paid off for both the actor and the studio.

In only its third weekend, Brand New Day surpassed $2 billion at the worldwide box office. It became only the eighth movie ever to reach that milestone and reportedly did so faster than every film except Avengers: Endgame.

The sequel opened with $932 million worldwide, including a record-breaking $360 million in North America. Its performance is especially impressive after several recent Marvel productions struggled commercially.

Is Tom Holland Marvel’s New Robert Downey Jr.?

Holland’s reported compensation follows a path previously traveled by Robert Downey Jr. The Iron Man star initially received a relatively modest salary before backend deals reportedly earned him more than $100 million across Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

One unnamed media executive even described Holland to TheWrap as “the new Robert Downey Jr.”

The comparison reflects more than his salary. Holland has portrayed Spider-Man across seven MCU films, making his Peter Parker the longest-running live-action incarnation of the character. More importantly, audiences have continued supporting his films even as enthusiasm for other superhero projects has declined.

Tom Holland Listened to Spider-Man Fans

Some of the film’s success may trace back to Holland’s efforts to give fans what they want, along with his own familiarity with the character.

Early last month, the actor told LADBible that he spent time between Spider-Man films researching online to learn what fans wanted. Once he felt he understood their expectations, he brought that feedback to Marvel during pitch meetings.

“I think the producers, at times were like, absolutely sick of me, but I think it’s really important, because we make these movies for [the fans],” he said.

During a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Holland recalled that he and Zendaya felt a particular scene was not working during production. Holland brought their concerns to director Destin Daniel Cretton, who agreed with their assessment.

Screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes was brought in to make changes, and the scene was reshot the following day.

“I’m so glad that we did because it sings in the movie,” Holland said. “It really does.”

Listening to the Audience Paid Off

All of that effort appears to be paying off.

Sony declined to comment on Holland’s compensation, while his representatives did not respond to requests for comment. However, if the reported figures are accurate, Brand New Day has not merely reaffirmed Spider-Man’s box-office strength. It has made Holland the financial face of Marvel’s future.

Additionally, its success highlights the potential rewards of listening to the audience.
