Kit Harington Replaces Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO Harry Potter Series — Was Activist Backlash to Blame?

HBO’s Harry Potter series has already made a significant change to its second-season cast, with Game of Thrones star Kit Harington replacing Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart less than two weeks after Hoult was officially announced for the role.

Deadline reports that Harington has joined the second season of HBO’s ambitious Harry Potter adaptation as the flamboyant Defense Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Hoult’s casting was only officially announced on August 11, meaning the turnaround from his announcement to his replacement took just 13 days. Hoult was also targeted immediately after the initial announcement by gender activists livid over his decision to support a J.K. Rowling project, leading many to wonder whether this had anything to do with his abrupt exit.

But according to TheWrap, Hoult departed because shifting production schedules created conflicts with his other projects, and HBO ultimately released him from the role. No specific project was identified as the cause of the conflict.

Nicholas Hoult’s Harry Potter Run Ends Almost Immediately

Hoult’s arrival had been treated as a major addition to the series.

The official Harry Potter website announced earlier this month that the Superman actor would portray Lockhart, describing the character as the “always-immaculate author-turned-Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.”

Lockhart is expected to become one of the most prominent new adult characters introduced during the show’s second season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Yet Hoult is now gone before ever filming the character.

The situation is particularly unusual because Season 2 production is expected to begin this fall, meaning HBO had little time to find another actor capable of stepping into such a recognizable role.

Fortunately for Warner Bros. Discovery, the replacement has already played Gilderoy Lockhart before.

Kit Harington Has Already Played Gilderoy Lockhart

Harington may actually be one of the easiest emergency replacements HBO could have found.

The former Jon Snow actor previously voiced Gilderoy Lockhart in the recent Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions produced by Pottermore Publishing and Audible.

Harington played Lockhart alongside a massive voice ensemble that includes Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Severus Snape, Michelle Gomez as Minerva McGonagall, and Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort.

That makes this an unusually convenient recasting.

Rather than bringing in an actor completely unfamiliar with the character, HBO is essentially promoting someone who has already performed Lockhart in another officially licensed adaptation of Rowling’s work.

Harington also has deep ties to HBO itself. He spent eight seasons playing Jon Snow on Game of Thrones and later appeared in the network’s Industry.

Gilderoy Lockhart Is One of Chamber of Secrets’ Biggest Characters

Lockhart was originally brought to life by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The character enters Hogwarts with an enormous celebrity reputation, having written numerous books supposedly chronicling his heroic encounters with dangerous magical creatures.

He is handsome, charismatic, obsessed with publicity, and adored by much of the wizarding world. There is just one problem: almost none of his legendary exploits actually belong to him.

Lockhart is eventually exposed as a fraud who stole other witches’ and wizards’ accomplishments before erasing their memories and taking credit for their adventures himself. That mixture of narcissism, comedy, cowardice, and theatrical charm made Branagh’s Lockhart one of the more memorable supporting performances from the original film franchise.

It also gives Harington an opportunity to play almost completely against the grim, brooding persona most audiences associate with Jon Snow.

Hoult Faced Gender Activist Backlash Almost Immediately After Joining Harry Potter

There’s another element to Nicholas Hoult’s extraordinarily short tenure as Gilderoy Lockhart that cannot simply be ignored: almost immediately after his casting was announced, the actor was subjected to backlash from gender activists and fans furious that he agreed to work on a J.K. Rowling production.

Hoult was officially announced as Lockhart on August 11. By August 12, NME was already reporting that the Superman actor was being criticized on social media specifically because of Rowling’s views on biological sex and gender.

Some of that reaction was not subtle.

One social media user complained that Hoult was working on something that would allegedly benefit hate while another declared that all of the goodwill toward the actor was “fully gone.”

Perhaps even more notable was the response from a Nicholas Hoult fan account, which announced it was suspending activity over his decision to join Harry Potter.

“Pausing any posts on this account for the time being,” the account stated before telling the actor to “do better” and claiming that many of his fans were hurt by the decision.

The backlash became substantial enough that ITV News devoted an entire report to it on August 14 under the headline, “Nicholas Hoult latest to face backlash over role in new Harry Potter TV series.”

That was just three days after Hoult had been announced.

And Hoult was hardly alone.

The controversy surrounding Rowling has created an increasingly bizarre environment in which actors and filmmakers involved with Harry Potter are routinely pressured to either condemn the woman who created the franchise or justify why they are willing to work on an adaptation of her books.

Bel Powley, who plays Petunia Dursley, publicly declared that she “strongly disagree[s]” with Rowling’s views and expressed support for the trans community.

John Lithgow, HBO’s new Albus Dumbledore, revealed that a friend with a transgender child sent him material urging him to abandon the series. Lithgow admitted that the pressure made him “uncomfortable and unhappy,” but ultimately refused to walk away from the role.

Nick Frost has similarly stressed that his views do not align with Rowling’s, while Severus Snape actor Paapa Essiedu signed an open letter supporting trans rights following the United Kingdom Supreme Court’s 2025 ruling concerning the legal definition of a woman.

The pressure has extended beyond the television series itself.

Black Mirror director Ally Pankiw recently revealed that she rejected an opportunity to work on Harry Potter, declaring, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” Fellow director Kate Herron subsequently said that she had been approached twice and rejected the project both times.

Hoult, then, walked directly into a culture-war firestorm the moment his casting became public.

And less than two weeks later, he was gone.

That timeline is inevitably going to raise eyebrows. However, it’s important to distinguish the facts from the speculation they are likely to produce.

There is currently no evidence that Hoult withdrew from Harry Potter because of the activist backlash. Deadline’s report on Kit Harington taking over the role attributes the change to scheduling issues, and there has been no credible reporting connecting Hoult’s departure to the controversy surrounding Rowling.

HBO’s Harry Potter Machine Keeps Moving

The casting change comes before audiences have even seen the first season of HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation.

The series is scheduled to debut during the Christmas 2026 season, with the opening year adapting Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The second season will move directly into Chamber of Secrets, with production scheduled to get underway this fall.

HBO has positioned the television reboot as an opportunity to adapt Rowling’s seven novels with significantly more room than the original eight-film franchise allowed. However, there has already been controversy surrounding the project.

Aside from gender activists and their never-ending crusade against anything related to Rowling, Harry Potter purists were also offended by the race-swapped casting of  Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Rowling serves as an executive producer alongside Francesca Gardiner, Mark Mylod, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.

Losing an actor as prominent as Hoult just 13 days after announcing him is certainly an unexpected hiccup for a production of this size. But if HBO had to suddenly replace its Gilderoy Lockhart, it could have done considerably worse than hiring the actor who is already playing Gilderoy Lockhart.
