‘Melania’ Documentary Is Getting a Sequel Series

Amazon MGM Studios may be expanding Melania into a documentary franchise.

Director Brett Ratner has claimed that two additional chapters of Melania: The Docuseries are in development. The project will continue the story told in the feature-length documentary, which chronicled the 20 days preceding President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.

“Here we go again…. The saga continues,” Ratner wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait to share with everyone around the world the next two chapters of Melania: The Docuseries.”

Ratner accompanied the announcement with a photograph of himself speaking to President Trump at a formal event.

Amazon has not confirmed the release or responded to inquiries from trade publications.

The Series Will Expand Beyond the Documentary

Marc Beckman, Melania Trump’s senior adviser, recently said on Real America’s Voice that the next two chapters would be a “total different experience, completely new.”

Unlike the movie, which focused on a relatively brief period, the follow-up will reportedly explore Melania’s work in the White House, family life, career, and philanthropic efforts. The expanded format should allow the filmmakers to examine subjects that could not fit comfortably into the 104-minute documentary.

The series was reportedly included in Amazon’s original agreement for Melania and was initially intended to be released alongside the movie when it arrived on Prime Video. The company paid approximately $40 million to license the project and allegedly spent an additional $35 million marketing its theatrical release.

Hollywood Still Wants to Call Melania a Failure

Unsurprisingly, much of the Hollywood access media has used those figures to portray the documentary as an embarrassing failure. The Hollywood Reporter emphasized that the movie earned approximately $16.6 million in theaters, while Entertainment Weekly claimed Ratner was “threatening” audiences with more Melania.

That framing conveniently ignores what the film actually accomplished.

Melania opened in the number three spot at the domestic box office with more than $7 million, delivering the strongest debut for a nonfiction movie in a decade. It eventually became the highest-grossing documentary of 2026 before continuing its run on Prime Video, where its value cannot be measured through theatrical ticket sales alone.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in an interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin that the film did “very well on streaming.” He added that “people are very curious about Melania.”

The film also exposed an extraordinary divide between professional reviewers and ordinary viewers. It currently holds a 10% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes but a 99% verified audience score.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel floated the conspiracy theory that ticket sales were being propped up through bulk purchases, despite presenting no evidence. He went on to imply that President Trump somehow had a hand in manipulating the high audience score. Defenders of the film argued that the simplest explanation is also the most likely: Conservative audiences exist, and they buy movie tickets.

Audiences Will Have the Final Word

Critics are free to dislike Melania, but their hostility did not prevent audiences from seeing it. The documentary performed far better than early projections and demonstrated that there is a substantial market for political entertainment produced outside the legacy media’s preferred narrative.

Should Amazon move ahead with two additional chapters, the decision would suggest that the company sees value beyond the theatrical gross. The documentary generated attention, attracted viewers to Prime Video, and reached an audience that Hollywood frequently misunderstands or dismisses.

The entertainment press will almost certainly attack the sequel series before anyone has seen it. However, its reaction to the original film already demonstrated how little influence hostile reviews hold over viewers interested in Melania Trump.
