Larry David is no longer laughing with his former friend Alan Dershowitz.

The Seinfeld co-creator ended their longtime friendship after the prominent attorney joined President Donald Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. Several years later, Dershowitz says the Curb Your Enthusiasm star remains openly hostile whenever their paths cross.

“Larry David doesn’t talk to me anymore,” Dershowitz told The Atlantic. “He screams and yells at me when he sees me.”

David and Dershowitz were once close friends and neighbors on Martha’s Vineyard. They regularly shared dinners and jokes, and David reportedly used the attorney’s home gym. However, their relationship collapsed after Dershowitz defended Trump during the president’s impeachment trial.

The dispute became public in 2021 when the two encountered each other outside a Martha’s Vineyard convenience store. When Dershowitz attempted to speak with him, David reportedly called him “disgusting” and refused to continue the conversation.

Larry David Says Dershowitz “Made a Deal With the Devil”

David recently confirmed that he has little interest in repairing the friendship.

“I don’t know why he’s still thinking and talking about me,” he said, according to Variety.

The comedian joked that he rarely behaves like his confrontational television persona unless he believes he could win a physical altercation.

“Hence the Dershowitz dust-up,” he remarked.

However, David acknowledged that the feud eventually crossed a line. Dershowitz revealed that the comedian never contacted him after his son Elon died from a stroke in 2025, despite knowing him well. David admitted that he should have offered his condolences and regrets failing to do so.

“I certainly regret not [reaching out],” David told The Atlantic. “As I said on Curb once, ‘I think of nice things. I just don’t act on them.’”

Still, that admission appears unlikely to lead to a reconciliation.

“I’m loath to say anything mean because he’s been so ostracized. But he only has himself to blame,” David said. “He made a deal with the devil. Literally. And I’d bet the devil hasn’t said a word to him since the impeachment.”

Political “No Contact” Is Becoming More Common

The collapse of David and Dershowitz’s friendship reflects a growing willingness among Americans to cut friends and relatives out of their lives over politics.

A 2026 study highlighted by UC Irvine found that 37% of Americans had experienced at least one “political breakup.” Among those respondents, 62% reported losing a friend, while 40% had fallen out with a family member.

The trend has been particularly pronounced among Democrats. Forty-seven percent reported experiencing a political breakup, compared with 29% of Republicans. Among respondents who had lost a relationship, 66% of Democrats said they initiated the separation, compared with 27% of Republicans.

Researchers warned that these breakups can reinforce ideological bubbles by eliminating opportunities to hear opposing perspectives from real people. They may also worsen loneliness and transform political disagreements into personal hostility.

When Political Differences Become Personal

David clearly considers Dershowitz’s support for Trump to be more than a routine policy disagreement. However, their broken friendship also demonstrates how deeply politics has intruded into Americans’ private lives.

When political loyalty becomes a test of personal character, even decades of shared history may offer little protection against a permanent rupture.

The man who built a career finding humor in petty social conflicts has become a prominent example of a far less amusing trend: treating political disagreement as grounds for permanent personal exile.
