Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor who brought Optimus Prime to life across more than four decades of Transformers productions, has died. He was 85.

Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, August 26, surrounded by his family. A cause of death was not disclosed.

“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family—and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide,” his family said in a statement provided to People.

“His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity and loyalty and always remember ‘be strong enough to be gentle.’”

The Definitive Voice of Optimus Prime

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series, which premiered in 1984. His commanding yet compassionate performance quickly became inseparable from the heroic leader of the Autobots.

He reprised the role in 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie, numerous animated series and video games, and Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers franchise.

Although his gravelly baritone had defined the character for a generation, Cullen’s involvement in the live-action movies was not guaranteed. Having left the role two decades earlier, he was still required to audition. However, Cullen said that Bay and Paramount were determined to give longtime fans what they wanted. Once officially cast, the actor resumed the role with a deep understanding of what made Optimus Prime work.

“I think the easiest way for me to approach the character was to [emphasize] the character traits that made him popular, and I was nervous at the beginning to know if these traits would indeed still be there and, of course, they were,” Cullen told IGN in a 2007 interview. “So that made it a lot easier, but the character traits that I think the fan base were feeling were I guess strength, courage, integrity, the honor and the passion—that leadership quality that I think the fans attached themselves to all of those years ago. They are still there, I’m glad to say.”

As fans remember Cullen, many are reflecting on how Optimus Prime became something of a father figure to them. Although the words came from writers, Cullen infused every line with the qualities that made the character aspirational. His most recent theatrical appearance as Optimus came in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Cullen also voiced several other characters in the original cartoon, including Ironhide, Streetwise, Wingspan, Slugslinger, and Nightstick.

The Man Behind the Autobot Leader

Cullen was born in Montreal on July 28, 1941. He began pursuing acting at an early age and spent one summer performing Shakespeare in Stratford, Ontario. He also worked in radio and appeared on local television.

In the late 1960s, he moved to Hollywood and worked on several variety programs, including The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

It may have been an unusual beginning for a career ultimately defined by the voice of a larger-than-life hero. However, Cullen said in interviews that he drew much of his inspiration for Optimus Prime from his brother Larry, a decorated U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam. Cullen recalled that his brother returned home a changed man.

“He was quieter and he was a man and a superhero to me,” Cullen said in 2006.

Larry’s quiet strength helped shape Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime as a leader guided by courage, integrity, and compassion rather than aggression.

Cullen’s Career Beyond Transformers

While Optimus Prime defined Cullen’s career, his unmistakable voice appeared throughout film and television.

He portrayed Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and continued voicing the melancholy donkey in projects including The Tigger Movie, Piglet’s Big Movie, and The Book of Pooh.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cullen’s other credits included Monterey Jack in Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the villainous KARR in Knight Rider, and the title creature’s vocalizations in 1987’s Predator. He also contributed to DuckTales, Gremlins, and the 1976 remake of King Kong.

However, Optimus Prime remained his signature character. For generations of viewers, Cullen was not merely an actor playing the Autobot leader. He was Optimus Prime.

Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar, and Clay.

The courage his offered a generation will live on through his commanding voice.
