Dolly Parton’s death will not bring an end to her creative work.

Before the country music icon died Tuesday at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, Parton spent years developing a roadmap intended to carry her ideas forward for decades. The plans include a biopic, documentary series, scripted television project, animated series and musical documentary, along with new music, books, attractions and branded products.

Parton’s longtime manager, Danny Nozell, said the singer remained involved in those projects until the end of her life.

“Dolly worked up until the day she died,” Nozell said in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times. “She loved seeing her dreams come to life, and loved knowing her work brought people joy.”

According to Nozell, Parton spent several years working with a team she personally selected to build a “project roadmap” capable of guiding the management of her work and public legacy well into the future.

A Biopic and Several Television Projects Are in Development

The slate includes a Dolly Parton biopic, a docuseries, a scripted series, and a documentary centered on her autobiographical stage musical.

Parton’s team is also developing an animated series based on her “Billy the Kid” children’s-book franchise, which follows the adventures of a French bulldog inspired by Parton’s own pet.

Another planned production is an avatar show that would use a digital version of the singer. Parton had discussed that project publicly shortly before her death.

The projects are in various stages of development. No release dates, casting information, directors, platforms, or production partners have been announced for the biopic, docuseries, or scripted series. Parton’s representatives said additional details would be disclosed later.

Nozell said the team wanted to be transparent with fans about their status while making clear that the underlying concepts had Parton’s blessing.

“If you see unreleased music, products, books, experiences, and campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels, you can have confidence in knowing that she placed her personal stamp on it,” he said in a statement published by MusicRow.

Parton’s Broadway Musical Will Proceed

The most prominent project already approaching its debut is “DOLLY: A True Original Musical,” Parton’s autobiographical Broadway production.

Previews are scheduled to begin Dec. 7 at New York’s St. James Theatre, with opening night set for Jan. 19, 2027, the date that would have been Parton’s 81st birthday. Producers confirmed to the Associated Press that the production will proceed according to her wishes.

Parton was closely involved in the show, co-writing its story with Maria S. Schlatter and creating new songs to accompany selections from her extensive catalog. Tickets are currently on sale for performances through Nov. 21, 2027.

The musical will give audiences a dramatized account of Parton’s journey from her childhood in East Tennessee to country-music stardom, Hollywood and the entertainment and business empire she built around her work.

A separate documentary about the creation of the musical is also among the projects Parton’s team intends to complete.

Hotels, a Museum, and New Products Are Coming First

Several ventures were already far enough along to have confirmed launch dates before Parton’s death.

Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops will mark National Truck Driver Appreciation Week beginning Sept. 13. The first location, in Cornersville, Tennessee, forms part of a planned network of travel centers developed around Parton’s brand and regional roots.

The Dolly Parton SongTeller Hotel in Nashville will begin welcoming guests Sept. 14 ahead of a grand opening on Sept. 29. The property will also house Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum, a 20,000-square-foot attraction scheduled to open on the same day.

A line of Dolly Dolls will launch online Sept. 15, while Dolly’s Cup of Ambition Coffee will arrive online Sept. 29 before expanding into retail stores in spring 2027.

Other scheduled releases include the holiday project “Dolly on the Holly,” a “9 to 5” jewelry collection created with Kendra Scott, Dolly’s Dog Treats, and a bedding and home décor line planned for the third quarter of 2027.

Parton’s team has also indicated that unreleased music, books, and additional experiences will emerge through official channels.

A Legacy Parton Intended to Manage Herself

Posthumous releases can raise questions about how much involvement a late artist actually had in the material carrying their name. Parton appears to have anticipated that concern.

Rather than leaving her team with only a collection of unfinished ideas, she helped establish a plan and personally approved projects across multiple areas of entertainment and commerce. Behind-the-scenes footage released by her representatives shows her recording promotional material during 2025 and 2026 for several of the coming launches.

“As the leader of the team responsible for overseeing her legacy, we will ensure the many dreams she had yet to fulfill are brought to life,” Nozell said.

The scale of the roadmap reflects the unusual breadth of Parton’s career. Alongside hundreds of songs, more than 100 million records sold worldwide and film roles in “9 to 5,” “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “Steel Magnolias,” she created a major tourism business and the Imagination Library literacy program.

Parton’s forthcoming biopic and documentary projects will now become part of that legacy. While many of their creative details remain unknown, her team’s announcement establishes that they were not conceived as hastily assembled memorials.

They were among the final projects of a famously tireless performer who, even while confronting the end of her life, was still planning what audiences would see next.
