Gal Gadot Signals She Won’t Return as Wonder Woman, Hasn’t Heard From James Gunn or DC Studios

Gal Gadot has given her clearest indication yet that she won’t return as Wonder Woman.

Speaking with ScreenRant while promoting her Prime Video thriller The Runner, Gadot revealed that she has not had any specific discussions with James Gunn or DC Studios about reprising Diana Prince in the rebooted DC Universe.

She has not been approached about following Jason Momoa’s example, either. After portraying Aquaman in the previous DC film franchise, Momoa returned to Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU as a different character, Lobo.

Gadot said the last meaningful conversations about her future took place when studio executives expressed interest in developing a third Wonder Woman movie.

“They came to the studio, and they really wanted to develop the third one,” Gadot said, according to ScreenRant’s interview.

Since then, however, she has not received another update.

Gadot stopped short of announcing that she had been formally dismissed from the role. Her comments nevertheless sounded unmistakably like a farewell, particularly when she offered her support to the actress who eventually inherits Wonder Woman’s boots.

“This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it’s going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character,” Gadot said. “And I’m just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for.”

Gadot Has Not Formally Ruled Out a Return

Gadot’s remarks should not be exaggerated into a formal announcement that she will never play Wonder Woman again.

She didn’t say those words, and neither Gunn nor DC Studios has publicly issued a definitive statement declaring that Gadot is permanently finished with the character. The studio also has not announced who will play Wonder Woman in its new cinematic universe.

What Gadot did confirm is that she has had no recent conversations about returning. Her reference to “whoever” portrays Diana next, coupled with her gratitude for having previously worn the costume, makes it clear that she’s no longer speaking as an actress expecting another Wonder Woman production to materialize around her.

Gadot is signaling that the role has moved beyond her, but the decision has apparently occurred through years of silence rather than a public break between the actress and the studio.

That silence is especially notable because DC Studios is actively developing another Wonder Woman movie. Gunn confirmed in 2025 that a new film centered on the Amazon hero was being written, and Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira was subsequently assigned to the project. Variety reported that the new movie was being developed as part of Gunn and Safran’s DCU.

No director, lead actress, production date, or release date has been officially announced.

The Long, Confusing Death of Wonder Woman 3

The uncertainty surrounding Gadot’s future began after Gunn and Safran assumed control of DC Studios in late 2022.

Before that leadership change, Gadot and director Patty Jenkins had been preparing a third movie in the continuity established by 2017’s Wonder Woman and its (lesser) 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Jenkins submitted a treatment for the proposed sequel, but Warner Bros. leadership elected not to move forward with it.

Variety reported in December 2022 that the treatment didn’t fit Gunn and Safran’s developing plans for a newly unified DC Universe.

Jenkins later disputed reports suggesting she had voluntarily abandoned the project or refused to cooperate with the studio. She said she had been open to considering what was asked of her but understood that there was nothing she could do to move the movie forward during DC’s restructuring.

The situation became even more confusing in August 2023, when Gadot publicly suggested that another sequel was still being planned.

“I love portraying Wonder Woman,” Gadot said at the time. “It’s so close and dear to my heart. From what I hear from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.”

That statement generated headlines declaring that Gadot would return under Gunn and Safran. Within days, however, industry reports contradicted that interpretation. TheWrap subsequently confirmed that a Gadot-led third movie was not in development at DC Studios.

Gadot’s latest remarks finally provide her side of what happened afterward: whatever interest was expressed during those earlier meetings never developed into an active production, and no one from the new DC regime has returned with a concrete proposal.

Gal Gadot Appears Ready to Pass the Wonder Woman Torch

There was no anger in Gadot’s response and no public criticism of Gunn, Safran, or Warner Bros. Instead, the actress appeared to treat her years as Wonder Woman as a completed chapter for which she remains grateful.

That makes her remarks more conclusive than another round of studio rumors. Three years after Wonder Woman 3 collapsed, Gadot is no longer talking about developing the movie or waiting for the project to be revived. She’s simply wishing the next actress well.

A surprise return can never be ruled out in a superhero franchise built around interconnected worlds, shifting continuities, and legacy appearances. Based on what Gadot actually said, however, there is no evidence that such a return is being discussed.

Wonder Woman will fly again in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. After nearly a decade associated with the role, Gadot now appears to accept that someone else will be holding the Lasso of Truth when she does.
