Rupert Grint is preparing to return to the Wizarding World more than 15 years after he last appeared as Ron Weasley.

The actor will reprise his most famous role in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. His limited 17-week engagement will run from February 2 through May 30, 2027, at New York City’s Lyric Theatre.

Grint portrayed Harry Potter’s loyal—and frequently exasperated—best friend in all eight Warner Bros. movies released between 2001 and 2011. He was only 11 when he was cast in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” Grint said in a statement published by Variety.

“There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.”

Rupert Grint Follows Tom Felton Back to Broadway

Grint will become the second actor from the Harry Potter movies to reprise his original role in the Broadway production.

Tom Felton joined the cast as Draco Malfoy in November 2025. His appearance produced a significant increase in ticket sales, and his engagement was subsequently extended through January 3, 2027.

However, fans hoping to see Ron and Draco reunite onstage may be disappointed. Felton’s engagement is currently scheduled to end approximately one month before Grint’s begins.

“Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past,” producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said, according to Deadline. “He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded.”

The producers added that Grint’s return creates a bridge between the original story and the stage production’s exploration of family, legacy, and the passage of time.

The Wizarding World Continues Expanding

Set 19 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Cursed Child follows the now-adult characters and their children. Its story primarily centers on Harry’s son, Albus Potter, and Draco’s son, Scorpius Malfoy, whose friendship leads them into a dangerous adventure involving time travel.

The play premiered in London in 2016 before arriving on Broadway two years later. Although commercially successful, its story remains divisive among fans who believe it contradicts elements of J.K. Rowling’s original novels.

Grint’s return also comes as Warner Bros. prepares to introduce an entirely new generation of actors in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter television adaptation. Like Grint before him, Alastair Stout was a largely unknown young actor when he was selected to portray Ron.

Grint Faces Criticism Over His Rowling Dispute

Not everyone is celebrating Grint’s return to his signature role. Many users online have noted the actor has attempted to distance himself from Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling over her opinions about protecting women’s spaces from biological men.

During a 2022 interview, Grint compared his relationship with Rowling to having an eccentric relative.

“I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie. It’s a tricky one,” he told The Times.

Unlike several actors cast in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, Grint is not primarily facing criticism for associating himself with a Rowling property. Instead, his critics contend that returning to the franchise after publicly disagreeing with its creator makes his position appear inconsistent.

Still, fans less concerned with ideology and offstage battles will likely welcome the opportunity to see Grint play Ron Weasley once again.

Presale tickets for Grint’s engagement will become available September 1, with general sales beginning the following day. Whether other members of the original movie cast will eventually follow Grint and Felton back to Hogwarts remains unknown.
