Although Peter Cullen has passed away, fans will have one final opportunity to hear the legendary actor command the Autobots as Optimus Prime.

Cullen’s final original performance as the heroic Transformers leader will appear in Optimus Prime: Awakening, a new 12-minute animated short produced by Hasbro Entertainment.

The short will screen after the credits of The Transformers: The Movie when the 1986 animated classic returns to theaters for its 40th anniversary. The remastered 4K rerelease will play internationally from September 17 through September 22.

The placement is especially meaningful because the original movie famously killed Optimus Prime, shocking children who had grown attached to the character through the television series. Four decades later, audiences will watch Cullen’s Optimus fall in battle before hearing the actor return for an unexpected final adventure after the credits.

Optimus Prime and Megatron Reunite One Final Time

According to ScreenRant, Optimus Prime: Awakening will expand upon the original movie while connecting the franchise’s past with its future. Hasbro has described the project as a love letter to both Cullen and the Transformers community.

The company has not released a detailed plot synopsis. However, the short will reunite Cullen with Frank Welker, who returns as Megatron and Soundwave. The two actors originated their respective roles in the original Transformers animated series more than four decades ago.

“Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other,” Welker said. “After all, one needs the perfect hero against the epitome of evil to create great drama. Peter’s portrayal of Prime was born of his own personal beliefs; honesty, loyalty, and always insisting on doing the right thing. This made it easy to be friends. Returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story opposite Peter’s Optimus in Optimus Prime: Awakening was a real gift. I will miss my friend, but that voice and his heart and values will always be part of Optimus Prime.”

Peter Cullen Defined Optimus Prime for Generations

As previously reported, Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 26. He was 85 years old.

The Canadian actor first voiced Optimus Prime when the original television series premiered in 1984. His commanding yet compassionate performance quickly became inseparable from the Autobot leader.

Cullen subsequently reprised the role in The Transformers: The Movie, numerous animated shows, video games, and Michael Bay’s live-action franchise. His most recent theatrical appearance as the character came in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Although Cullen’s gravelly voice gave Optimus his authority, the actor never portrayed the character as a conventional action hero. Instead, he emphasized courage, integrity, compassion, and quiet strength.

Cullen drew inspiration from his brother Larry, a decorated U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam. Before his audition, Larry advised him not to portray Optimus as a stereotypical Hollywood hero but as a genuine leader—someone “strong enough to be gentle.”

Those words guided Cullen throughout his decades with the character and later appeared in his family’s statement announcing his death.

For generations of fans, Cullen did far more than provide Optimus Prime with a recognizable voice. He gave the Autobot leader his heart. Optimus Prime: Awakening will now allow audiences to hear that voice—and experience that heart—one final time.
