Country music singer Jelly Roll appears to be learning a painful lesson about telling customers to take their business elsewhere.
The Grammy-winning singer has reportedly lost more than 200,000 followers across his social media platforms after spending several nights taking shots at President Donald Trump while guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! and subsequently telling fans angry about his political jokes to stop listening to his music.
Conservative commentator Benny Johnson reported that his team examined Jelly Roll’s social media accounts using multiple tracking services and discovered at least 200,000 people had unsubscribed or unfollowed the singer since his stint behind Jimmy Kimmel’s desk began.

“We ran all of his social media through various tracking and found at least 200,000 unsubscribes since he started hosting Jimmy Kimmel,” Johnson said, according to Breitbart.
While That Park Place hasn’t independently verified Johnson’s full 200,000 figure across every platform, publicly available Instagram tracking data confirms that Jelly Roll has suffered a substantial follower exodus in the days following his late-night appearances.
And the timing is difficult to ignore.
Jelly Roll’s Instagram Following Plummets
Jelly Roll began guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! on August 24, using his first monologue to make several jokes about President Trump.
Among other things, Jelly Roll mocked Trump’s weight, his handling of a flag at an IndyCar event, and his approval numbers. The singer joked that his own dramatic weight loss meant he had “lost an entire Donald Trump” before suggesting that much of the country wanted to do the same.
The reaction from portions of Jelly Roll’s country music audience was immediate. More importantly, there’s now data showing that people did more than simply complain.

According to social media analytics service DolphinRadar, Jelly Roll’s Instagram account had 5,910,903 followers on August 24.
By September 2, that number had fallen to 5,857,264—a loss of 53,639 Instagram followers in just nine days.
The daily numbers make the timing even more striking.
Jelly Roll lost only 203 followers on August 25. That accelerated to 2,512 on August 26 and then exploded to 9,099 on August 27.
He subsequently lost 10,719 followers on August 28 and another 14,118 followers on August 29 alone.
The bleeding continued through the weekend and into September, with another 5,434 followers disappearing on September 1 and 2,989 more on September 2.
In other words, this wasn’t simply a gradual decline in Jelly Roll’s popularity. There was a sudden and dramatic acceleration immediately following his controversial Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearances.
Jelly Roll Told Angry Fans to Stop Listening…So They Did
Things might have ended with the initial backlash.
Instead, Jelly Roll doubled down.
After Trump-supporting fans criticized the singer and some threatened to boycott his music, Jelly Roll addressed them during another Kimmel monologue. He defended himself by noting that he was hosting a late-night comedy show, where political figures have traditionally been the targets of jokes.
Then came the line that may prove far more consequential.
“For those who threatened to stop listening to my music based on my comments last night, I just want to say with conviction: go right ahead,” Jelly Roll said.

Apparently, quite a few of them did.
Newsmax host Carl Higbie even deleted Jelly Roll’s music from his personal library on television following the controversy.
Jelly Roll continued addressing the controversy throughout his guest-hosting run.
During his final night on August 27, he rejected accusations that Hollywood or Jimmy Kimmel Live! producers had pressured him into criticizing Trump.
ABC’s own description of the segment says Jelly Roll addressed claims that he had become a “mouthpiece for all the left-wing lunatics in Hollywood” before discussing his political beliefs, faith, immigration, and what he described as the importance of human dignity and compassion.
“Before this week, everybody thought I was MAGA and now they think I’m some sort of liberal snowflake,” he joked.
Jelly Roll Made a Risky Bet With His Own Audience and Lost
There’s an important distinction between Jelly Roll criticizing President Trump and what happened afterward. Nobody is obligated to support Trump, and entertainers are obviously free to criticize the president. Jelly Roll is equally free to make whatever political jokes he wants.
But audiences are just as free to respond.
That’s where Jelly Roll’s decision to explicitly tell disgruntled fans to stop listening becomes particularly noteworthy.
Jelly Roll built much of his enormously successful career around themes of redemption, addiction, faith, incarceration, personal responsibility, and second chances. Those themes helped him develop an unusually loyal following among working-class Americans and country music listeners, including a significant number of conservatives.
That doesn’t mean Jelly Roll owes those listeners political allegiance.

It does mean that antagonizing part of that audience and then effectively daring them to leave represents a significant gamble.
Johnson believes that’s precisely what happened.
“What’s happening here is that Jelly Roll turned on his audience,” Johnson argued. “He turned on the people that brought him.”
Johnson’s claim of at least 200,000 lost followers remains an aggregated figure from his team’s analysis but the underlying phenomenon is increasingly difficult to dispute.
More than 53,000 followers have disappeared from Jelly Roll’s Instagram account alone since his Kimmel stint began, with the losses accelerating dramatically after his Trump jokes and subsequent response to angry fans.
And those numbers are still falling.
