While overall viewership for the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show was down from the previous year, it appears that Emmy voters were watching.

The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny won seven Emmys Saturday night, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live). Bad Bunny earned his first Emmy for his work as a performer and executive producer on the broadcast.

The show swept all seven categories in which it was nominated, making it the most-awarded Super Bowl halftime show in Emmy history.

In addition to Outstanding Variety Special, the production won awards for directing, music direction, choreography, production design, sound mixing, lighting design, and technical direction and camerawork. Director Hamish Hamilton and music director Miguel Gandelman were among the production team members recognized for their work.

While the show may have been technically impressive, it was also steeped in controversy. This latest round of recognition may therefore say more about what resonates with Hollywood’s awards establishment than with the broader American audience. For the millions of viewers who tuned out during the break in the Big Game, another collection of Hollywood trophies is unlikely to change their opinion of the performance.

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Performance Divided Viewers

Bad Bunny’s selection as the Super Bowl LX halftime headliner generated controversy almost immediately after it was announced.

During an October appearance on Saturday Night Live, the Puerto Rican singer joked that Americans concerned about his predominantly Spanish-language music had “four months to learn” Spanish.

The controversy continued into Super Bowl weekend. Bad Bunny performed almost entirely in Spanish and incorporated Puerto Rican imagery throughout the elaborate production, which also featured appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.

President Donald Trump was among the performance’s most vocal critics, calling the halftime show “absolutely terrible” and arguing that it failed to represent American cultural standards of success, creativity, and excellence.

Turning Point USA Offered an Alternative Halftime Show

Meanwhile, Turning Point USA offered its own counterprogramming with the “All-American Halftime Show,” featuring Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Gabby Barrett, and Lee Brice.

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet later claimed the alternative broadcast accumulated more than 25 million views across YouTube and Rumble, although those figures represented digital views rather than a directly comparable television audience measurement. The program continued drawing views through replays, while strong online engagement demonstrated that there was an audience looking for an alternative to Bad Bunny’s show.

Whether that ultimately starts a trend remains to be seen. An Emmy nomination for any Turning Point USA production seems unlikely, but for organizations operating outside the traditional entertainment industry, viewership and cultural impact may be more valuable measures of success than recognition from the Academy.

Emmy Voters Embrace Bad Bunny

Whatever viewers thought of the performance itself, the Television Academy clearly approved of the technical achievement behind it.

The seven victories made Bad Bunny’s production the most-awarded Super Bowl halftime performance in Emmy history and gave the singer another major entertainment award to accompany his Grammy collection.

Jay-Z also received an Emmy as one of the show’s executive producers through Roc Nation, adding to his previous television honors.

The sweep is unquestionably a major awards achievement for Bad Bunny and everyone involved in the production. Whether it represents a broader vindication of the halftime show is another question entirely. Nielsen ultimately recorded 128.2 million viewers during Bad Bunny’s performance, below the 133.5 million who watched Kendrick Lamar the previous year and nearly 10 million below the 137.8 million who were watching shortly before halftime.

Seven Emmys can demonstrate that Bad Bunny impressed the Television Academy. They cannot demonstrate that the millions of viewers who chose not to stick around were wrong to change the channel.
