BBC Officially Puts Doctor Who Out to Tender Following Collapse of Russell T Davies and Ncuti Gatwa Era

Doctor Who crying

The BBC has officially opened the bidding for the future of Doctor Who, formally putting the once iconic science-fiction franchise out to competitive tender following the disastrous end of Russell T Davies’ second stint running the series and Ncuti Gatwa’s controversial tenure as the Doctor.

The BBC formally published its invitation to tender on September 17, seeking a production company to take responsibility for a new multi-episode series and specials intended for broadcast in 2028 or 2029.

Initial submissions are due October 2, with a successful producer expected to be selected in spring 2027.

The contract will initially cover one series, although the BBC will retain an option for a second. The arrangement is explicitly work-for-hire, meaning the BBC will continue to own the Doctor Who intellectual property and broadcast the program.

In other words, Doctor Who is not being sold. The BBC is looking for someone new to rebuild it after Russell T Davies nearly ended it for good.

Picking Up the Pieces After Davies and Gatwa

That rebuilding job comes after an enormously disappointing attempt to relaunch Doctor Who as a bigger international franchise.

Davies returned to the series alongside production company Bad Wolf with considerably more resources and Disney+ serving as the international home for new episodes. David Tennant returned for the 60th anniversary specials before Gatwa assumed the role of the Fifteenth Doctor.

But the promised new golden age never materialized.

Gatwa departed after just two full seasons, Disney subsequently ended its involvement with the series, Davies and Bad Wolf stepped away, and the BBC eventually canceled a previously announced 2026 Christmas special.

The television ratings weren’t encouraging either.

According to Broadcast, Gatwa’s second season averaged approximately 3.3 million viewers after 28 days, down from roughly 3.8 million for his first full season.

The 2025 season premiere managed approximately 4 million viewers after 28 days, while the finale reached roughly 3.5 million.

Those numbers are particularly striking considering the resources and international ambitions behind Davies’ return.

Disney doesn’t publicly release comprehensive Doctor Who viewership figures, making the show’s international performance considerably harder to judge. But whatever Disney saw internally apparently wasn’t enough to keep the Mouse House aboard.

BBC Wants Another Regeneration

The tender also provides the clearest indication yet of what the BBC wants from whoever inherits the TARDIS.

According to Radio Times, the BBC wants the next incarnation to be “contemporary and creatively ambitious” while remaining distinctly British.

Interestingly, the BBC also says it doesn’t want the series to become overly dependent upon existing Doctor Who lore.

That’s particularly notable following Davies’ second era, which repeatedly reached backward into the franchise’s history, resurrecting characters and villains including Sutekh and the Rani while ultimately ending Gatwa’s run with the Doctor inexplicably regenerating into Billie Piper.

The BBC’s brief also emphasizes developing at least one substantial companion who can serve as an audience access point, while leaving potential producers flexibility over episode counts and whether the program follows serialized or traditional story-of-the-week storytelling.

A Long Wait for the TARDIS

The most extraordinary part of the situation may simply be how long Doctor Who will disappear from television.

Gatwa’s final regular episode aired in May 2025. The BBC is now targeting 2028 or 2029 for the next proper series.

That potentially leaves one of Britain’s most recognizable television franchises without a regular series for approximately three to four years.

The BBC insisted in June that putting the program out to tender demonstrates its “continued commitment” to Doctor Who and will ensure audiences can enjoy the series “for years to come.”

Perhaps. But there is no getting around what preceded this attempted regeneration.

Davies returned with Disney money, a substantially expanded international platform, Bad Wolf behind the production, and enormous publicity surrounding Gatwa’s casting. Less than three years after Gatwa’s first appearance, Disney, Gatwa, Davies, Bad Wolf, and The Christmas special were all gone.

Now the BBC is asking somebody else to figure out what comes next.
