Spike Lee has never been known for avoiding controversial political or cultural subjects. However, the outspoken filmmaker had remarkably little to say about Hollywood’s biggest corporate battle.

When Variety asked Lee about Paramount Skydance’s proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, he quickly declined to offer an opinion.

“Warner Bros. thing? I got nothing to say about that,” Lee said, shaking his head. Laughing, he added, “I gotta make some more movies, if you know what I’m talking about!”

The controversial filmmaker’s comment could be interpreted in two ways. Lee may believe the merger’s outcome is beyond his control. Alternatively, he may simply prefer to keep his thoughts private.

Either way, his refusal stands out amid widespread opposition from other Hollywood stars. The proposed deal would unite two of the entertainment industry’s largest studios under Paramount CEO David Ellison.

Lee’s answer may also reflect the professional risks of criticizing a company that could soon control a significant portion of Hollywood.

Hollywood Stars Campaign Against Paramount Merger

Earlier this year, thousands of actors, directors, writers, and other entertainment professionals signed an open letter opposing the merger.

The letter argued that the deal would reduce competition, eliminate jobs, and give one corporation excessive control over film and television.

“The integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised,” the signatories warned, according to Variety.

The campaign attracted several major Hollywood names, including Florence Pugh, Mark Ruffalo, and Pedro Pascal.

All three play prominent roles in Disney’s Marvel franchise, while Pascal also portrays the Mandalorian in Star Wars. Notably, none publicly opposed Disney’s acquisition of Fox, a consolidation that has since provided them with considerable career opportunities.

Mark Ruffalo Leads the Opposition

A combined Paramount and Warner Bros. would control an enormous collection of studios, networks, streaming services, and intellectual properties. Criticizing the deal could therefore limit a filmmaker’s employment opportunities across the industry.

Ruffalo has nevertheless become one of the merger’s most vocal opponents. In addition to signing the open letter, the actor co-wrote a New York Times op-ed with American Economic Liberties Project research director Matt Stoller.

Last April, Ruffalo appeared by videoconference at a U.S. Senate hearing organized by Sen. Cory Booker.

California and 11 other states argue that the merger would further concentrate power within an already consolidated entertainment industry. Paramount has attempted to overcome that opposition while threatening to relocate jobs outside California.

Ruffalo recently warned California Attorney General Rob Bonta against settling the multistate lawsuit seeking to block the transaction.

“Don’t you dare settle,” Ruffalo declared while calling on Bay Area residents to protest outside Bonta’s office.

Spike Lee Chooses Silence

Lee has spent decades speaking publicly about racial and political issues both within Hollywood and beyond it. Yet a business deal of historic scale is apparently one subject on which he prefers to remain silent.

Whatever Lee privately thinks about the merger, he appears more interested in his next project than Hollywood’s ongoing corporate battle. His answer may not satisfy those seeking another celebrity endorsement for either side, but it reflects a straightforward priority: Lee wants to keep making movies while others argue over who ultimately owns the studios.
